Can someone explain to me what gacha games even are Ive never played one
"Gachapon" is a Japanese term for the things where you put a quarter in and get a random plastic toy. A gacha game is essentially any game where you can gamble for characters like this, usually with an anime aesthetic.
They're very popular because they can generally be played for free and, since the popular ones make a lot of money off the gambling, they can hire tons of people and update the game at a pace that other game genres typically can't match.

there has been a lot of r&d by developers of these things into exactly how to maximally exploit the vulnerable

I think it's a type of game where you collect things, usually with a real-world-money-shortcut element.
Imagine a normal game but you need to spend thousands of dollars on a gambling system to get actually good stuff
Yeah, in my experience (of playing WuWa), she's.. decent at playing Carlotta, especially since you meet her a LOT being an important noble family member in the game. Though, I'm still quite surprised WuWa won instead of Genshin or even Dispatch, or E33.
