Getting there but oh my god can it please stop raining! Everything I need for work is soaked through and stinking.

Stressed the fuck out at work. I feel like I'm fucking up, all the time.
Honestly same. Hang in there mate.
I heard that. Is it challenging stuff, or are you just not at your best lately?
I used to feel that way a lot, and it took someone with an outside perspective to realise that I was being shouldered with too much and zero training or support to get me to a better place.
Cheers mate.
Objectively I know I'm doing alright, but there are so many spinning plates at the moment and everyone else is just as stressed, nothing is getting done and its falling on me
Ah, gotcha. I know how that one feels too, from a past job. All the little victories of a hard day's work start to feel hollow when they don't feel like they're adding up.
Careful how you treat yourself, the burnout can be insidious. I didn't feel better until I got another job ultimately, but hopefully your situation is brighter - and this is all temporary.
The decaf coffee experiment continues, though I'm allowing myself a cup of black tea or yerba mate later in the day if I really need it. And I often do. I do seem to be sleeping more of the night this week, though. I decided to quit my daily full mug of espresso when I was averaging 3.5 hours. I think job stress was the real culprit, but this is a much easier lever to pull.
Still, I did manage to get everything done yesterday despite spending the whole morning at a school show, then getting stuck with the school run unexpectedly. That was probably my Christmas miracle.
OP, how about you? Hope your dad's doing better?
It's been pretty stressful, not gonna lie! I was visiting him every day straight after work and also dealing with random messages he'd send during the day. Ended up picking up that flu that's going around on Friday and was totally wiped out the entire weekend, recovered enough by Monday to work (I work from home) but yesterday I was wiped again so took the day off sick. I only managed to see him on Monday but due to being ill I haven't had chance, and the number of requests from him for me have been rising.
My dad's still in hospital but they've found the infection and he's been feeling a lot better and mentally doing better too, and he's having physio and OT sessions to help get him back on his feet, but his mobility was so bad before hand they might wonder if he's safe to go back home on his own.
How are you finding having decaf coffee? It's not something I've really done yet, but I think I have a good handle on my coffee intake, I'll have two cups in the morning and then switch to tea until mid-afternoon.
Sounds like he's turning the corner! That's good to hear. Odd coincidence that I found out last weekend my father in law back in the states had a fall due to fainting, fractured his lumbar and some ribs. Sounds like he's in for a round of physio himself. You wish they'd look after themselves a bit better, eh?
I also work from home. Really hoping my kid doesn't bring that flu home, I could do without that.
I make my coffee quite strong normally, and the effect of that first sip hits hard. With decaf, it's a similar flavour but you don't get that keen sense of having been dosed with something. I find myself staring reproachfully at the mug. I might just go native and switch to tea at this point.
Ah I broke my no caffeine streak the other day. I had a task I needed to power through (which historically, caffeine has always done the job) but instead it just got me super anxious and I procrastinated on other tasks
Being an adult is fulfilling your obligations, and I'm now wondering if I've changed much from that anxious teenager who'd rather build a lego fort than do their homework. This year needs to END.
Ah, nevermind! Get back on that horse. I'm still getting caffeine from tea, but a lot less. I'm drinking decaf coffee in the morning, and I'm noticing I get a lot less pleasure from it. I'll eventually be able to drop coffee altogether perhaps.
Still, I'm having just a cup of yerba mate with lunch, though it is super strong stuff. Different feel, a much steadier buzz. I might try to go with just black tomorrow all the same.
May you find the even rounded buzz you were looking for!
Well, my ADHD decided I should hyperfocus on setting up my homelab again. So I have been. For the past several days. With no breaks to relax, just homelab, eating and sleeping. As you'd get expect, I'm pretty drained, but at least my homelab is 80-90% done now.
what you got running?
I'm running Proxmox on a mini PC. On Proxmox, I have AdGuard, NPMPlus, and Homepage LXCs, as well as a VM for Docker, with Jellyseerr, Jellyfin, Radarr, Sonarr, Notifiarr, and qBittorrent containers.
I haven't really done much with NPM or AdGuard yet. But all the other services are set up and communicating with each other - so I can request media via my Discord server, or Jellyseerr's web ui, and it'll go through the right apps and add them to Jellyfin for me to watch. All the media, configs, backups, etc., are all stored on my NAS, since I've got a few TB of space on there.
I also realised before going to sleep that while it feels like I've been working on it for a straight week, I only actually started setting it up on the 5th.
This is the latest screenshot I have of my dashboard, still adding stuff to it and tweaking it.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and Prowlarr and FlareSolverr aswell, I keep forgetting about them because they're very backend.
The whole *arr shebang I see 🏴☠️ :-)
I quite like the clean UI of proxmox, and I guess most of these are docker/podman containers with some LXC ones too. It's really clean I like it!
I take it your Synology is on another device, and this is your main Jellyfin server which network mounts the synology when needed?
I tend to use DietPi for this kind of thing, which touches baremetal and uses no containers whatsoever, but it's aimed at small SBCs than miniPCs
Thanks! Yes, Synology is on another device (my Synology NAS). Honestly? Never going to buy Synology again. Once it stops working for whatever reason, I might just make my own. The Synology DSM is a nightmare to work with - absolutely horrible UX and UI. Did you know it doesn't even have a dark mode?
Anyway, yeah, it's mounted to some to my Mini PC running Proxmox and all my other services. I store the media stack's content on there, some service configs, and I'm also currently using Proxmox's built-in backup feature for daily backups of my LXCs/VM, and put those on there too.
Since making this post I've also set up AdGuard and NPMPlus. I now have external and internal domains for my services, depending on if I wanted to make them externally accessible or not. Unfortunately, EE is annoying, and the router they gave me doesn't allow me to set a DNS server, so I have to figure out what I wanna do about that. Right now I've just set it manually on my Linux install for testing.
I use onestream with a crummy modem and I just put it into bridge mode and feed all connections into my openwrt router.
It's pretty neat, I just copy the modem credentials to the router and the modem just gets out of the way.
I cant wait for the day when someone invents a thumbdrive sized modem
I've got a few deadlines creeping up, so I thought I'd do some work over the weekend - and I'm happier for it.
I forgot what it's like to work on the weekend, just doing stuff at your own pace, no stress, no new messages derailing you to prioritize something, just taking the time to do the task properly.
And once you're done you can just enjoy the rest of the weekend, guilt-free.
I used to do this a lot in my last job where my hours weren't micromanaged, but stopped in my current job where they're really tight on hours and forgot that I liked going to work on the weekend.
Whipped, I know
I wouldn't mind getting things done on my weekends since I'm paid based on my billable time, but my kid needs me too much for it to be a regular occurrence. Different kind of whipped, really.
I have the feeling you're more efficient with your time though. I remember back when I was with my ex, I was super focused at work because I knew I wouldn't have time later.
Now? I stretch out all my tasks across the whole waking period
Maybe? My productivity is highly elastic. Yesterday I got 8 hours' worth done in 3, and today I spent 8 hours getting 3 done, but today I laid down a brutal fusillade of emails that looked like I was busy as fuck.
I'm not efficient by choice. I have to finish fast, because if I don't I have to work in the nighttime which makes me into, as Carl Panzram put it, "a bit of a grouch".
Carl Panzram
Huh, now that's a... that's a name I've not heard in a while, or perhaps ever. TIL hahahaha
I like weird tragedies. #relatable
Not bad, thanks. I managed to clean my study this weekend. Dust is gone, desk surface can be seen again, and the computer screen is once again clean.
How’s your week been?
God, doesn't dusting just make everything feel SO much better? It's always been crazy to me how different a room or workstation feels after dusting. Well done 💪
Tough! Booked Friday off work, but it's going mental there at the moment. Ended up having to work Friday anyway cos my colleague either can't figure out what needs doing, or the management didn't even ask him. Still, it's a few hours, not the end of the world.
Otherwise, I've dropped my calorie budget to try and shed down to 65kg before February (currently ~69kg, 6ft male), working out, and booked some nice stuff for my birthday mid-next year.
I'm going to be drinking again on my birthday after a year off, and I'm a little nervous that I'm going to get completely and embarrassingly fucked up, but... Well. We'll see, won't we? I'm still very much in two minds about it. The isolation of going sober and the feelings around a breakup from last year and just my interactions with dating in general have been buzzing around my head these last few days! Very conflicted.
I also went a bit mental with a disposable razor and cut shapes into my hair badly, so there's that. I think it's funny, though, and doesn't quite cross the line into looking actively hideous, so might be a keeper 😂
Anyway! How about yours?? Happy Sunday! 🥳
I've been pondering a year off drinking just for health and tolerance reasons. At this point I can get through a handle of vodka over a long weekend and hardly stumble, it's hardly worth the cost anymore. Need to get on firmer footing with my foray into decaf coffee first, one vice at a time.
My week has been alright. Looking forward to a bigger than usual Christmas, but I'm way behind on gift shopping. We also got some promising developments in my wife's job hunt lately, which has started to feel a bit hopeless of late. Really looking forward to her getting back to work, despite how nice it is to have her around.
Honestly, it's so expensive isn't it. If you're pondering it, I'd say absolutely go for it! I've found loads of benefits to a sober year!
I also tried to decaffeinate for a month or so! I've cut out energy drinks, which I was doing 2x 500ml a day, but I'm on coffee instead now, although only one cup a day at work. Three or four cups a day when I'm at home though! Still, it's healthier than energy drinks. Way way way cheaper, too. Best of luck 💪
Job hunting is painful. I'm happy to hear your wife has had luck lately, and I hope it continues! 🤞
