/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Never even considered that Klingons could be thought of as blackface

Yeah brown stage makeup does not equal blackface. Blackface is a white person playing the role of a human of another race, and perpetuating a racial stereotype. MISSA GORIGHTRY!!!

There are some racial overtones to some of the Trek alien races though. They used to use white actors for Klingons in TOS but they would give them Fu Manchu mustaches and a yellowy orangey skin tone. They were sneaky and devious. Now they use black actors a lot for Klingons and they’re big brutes. The Romulans of TNG look more Asian now, and guess what! They’re sneaky and devious!

None of this is blackface and a lot of it is just me doing pattern recognition on weak signals. Nine of it is over the line.

I’m with you, they’re aliens, and they can (and have) been portrayed wonderfully by folks of all ethnicities. If anything they’re emulating Vikings in modern depictions, and if that’s the case… they’re pretty metal 🤘

Klingons seem to be the only alien species in star trek that has multiple races/ethnicities. Every other alien i can think of all wear identical makeup/prosthetics. Klingons get a whole range of appearanes.

Off the top of my head: Vulcan, Andorian, Orion, Xindi

EDIT: How could i forget these folks?

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Oh, yeah, I'll give you Vulcan. Do the Xindi all count as one species? I took them to be six (well, five now) distinct species that all evolved on the same planet. As for Andorians, I guess they have the Aenar but Shran described them as a "sub-species". Not sure if that was racism on his part or not. Orions I've never seen portrayed as anything but green.

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You are right, Xindi and Andorian/Aenar are actually different species, so that shouldn't count. There were blue Orions in The Animated Series and Lower Decks

Hey, that's awesome. I never even noticed while watching LD bc they spent so much time just expanding Orion culture in general. Such a good show.

I have some bad news for both of you about the Ferengi.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 5 points 2 days ago

Just learned from another thread that "feringhee" is a disparaging term for whites/europeans in India.
