I love LARPing, but I no longer have the free time or extra money to engage with it. I'm also living in a place where the hobby hasn't evolved since the 80s and all the new larps just cannibalize each other's players and rules, so I'm not interested in stretching my time or money to do it poorly.

I never knew of it, seems like a pretty fun thing to do..

Like all things it's more about the people than the actual event, but I've never had more fun than going out to a campsite for the weekend and pretending to fight evil.

Hey there, you can live in low cost-of-living countries, teach English, buy your dream camera, travel and photograph cool stuff all over the world.

I've been traveling for over a decade and know people who do exactly that.

You can talk to me here, messages or in travel if you have any questions. I can explain passports, where to go, all that jazz.

Easier to wait until you're 18 to travel, but you can get everything in order now and have a viable plan and resources to pursue photography as a passion if you're still into it later on.

Thanks a lot, that sounds really peaceful actually, i will look into it once i actually get free from the academic insanity πŸ˜…

For sure! It's a very comfortable lifestyle, and you can make it as serene or exciting as you like. My mood varies.

Let me know if you ever have travel questions, best of luck with your studies!

Phone cameras are so good now, you are not missing too much from not having a β€œproper” camera. Most of photography is about choosing the right subject and composition, which you can do a lot with a phone camera.

Or try getting a film camera if possible, you can have a lot of fun with it.

[–] rockstarmode@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

I agree with this comment!

The best camera is the one you have, meaning that subjects or moments often pop up when you're unprepared, and your phone camera is probably really good and always in your pocket. Take advantage of its availability!

I also agree on film cameras. Getting the film developed is kind of a pain, and doing it yourself is also quite involved. But shooting on film (slides) forced me to think more about composition, lighting, lens selection, and how I'd develop the resulting image.

I ended up with 3 lenses: a 50mm normal in f1.4, a 20mm wide in f2.8, and a 200mm macro in f4, all in prime. Sure these lenses are awesome (and relatively expensive) but unless you're a pro they're entirely unnecessary. They did however teach me about framing, perspective, light, and how optics change your image.

If I went about it again, I'd just take a few photography classes which focused on film (to develop good habits) and rent gear. Then use my phone camera or a cheap digi to have fun.

plus there are tons of cheap used cameras for dirt cheap. digital or film.

Thats the thing where I live (india), good luck getting anything used from somewhere like OLX without being scammed or even killed lmao.. the only way to do it is if you know someone else personally willing to sell.. also unlike ebay or smthng the pre owned cameras arent very cheap anyway.. they still sell decade old cameras atp like panasonic mfts at like 75% of their original price, it requires a lot of effort to get anything done here.. unless ofc you have lots of money to throw

[–] brachypelmide@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

Hard agree. I'll admit that I'm getting an actual camera now purely for the optical zoom and the better depth of field. Other than that I'm more than content with a phone sensor.

I would love to build a giant O-Scale train layout. Full send...mountains, tunnels, rivers, a city, multiple freight and passenger lines.

Oh my god is that expensive and time consuming. I don't have the money or the time, and if I ever do have that much money or time I'll be old and won't have the energy anymore.

Oh well. I'm super good at making sandwiches though. So I got that going for me...Which is nice.

Through much of my life my hobbies were expensive because I had money, but little free time...

Now I'm poor and I have free time, but I can no longer afford to pursue any of my hobbies.

I love coding..I maintained my own open source app for 7 years.

I don’t have time for it, and it started giving me panic attacks when I tried to make an income of it. Money and AI ruined it for me. No, I don’t want to vibe code

AstroNinja. It’s Linux only and has been broken for a year because I just have too many panic attacks now.

I used to love doing SCA heavy combat, which can be expensive but mainly it takes a time investment. Most of my abandoned hobbies are ruled out by time limitations or gaps in my social life, not knowing the right people anymore.

[–] respectmahauthoritybrah@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Cool, not related to SCA heavy combat particularly but i think it would be so cool and useful if we were taught some sort of martial arts in schools..

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Dude my high school in America did a unit on fencing. That was the only time in PE I applied myself.

[–] respectmahauthoritybrah@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Thats so fucking cool man, My PE periods in highschool where essentially free for all with a few basketballs and cricket bats.. do whatever you can with those haha, or even worse theory classes from books that havent been revised since god knows when and include a shit ton of misinformation

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 2 points 3 months ago

It was mainly that. I'd just walk and talk to someone mostly, fade into the background.

[–] 7EP6vuI@feddit.org 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

don't let you intimidate by fancy camera gear or fancy locations. everyone can make okayish photos when they have top notch cameras and a great location.

the interesting part is to take everyday situations and a simple camera and still being able to create good photos!

social media influencer get expensive gear for free to show and tell how good and fancy it is, and what you can accomplish with it. nobody will post a good photo create by a potato camera and be proud of it. they also get holidays for free. but let assure you good photos don't need expensive gear or fancy locations.

find the special things in everyday life!

[–] respectmahauthoritybrah@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Yep i can absolutely still take atleast according to my definition hehe decent pics with my phone in quite a few conditions.. like the one i attached in the original post, however in most cases the biggest problem is tbh is being stuck with essentially a very small focal range.. there are a lot of cases i feel i could take a good pic if i just had a better telephoto lens, but manufacturers seem to always prioritize ultra wide lenses..

Edit: like this completely random one i found kinda cool haha

I miss making model ships, photography, camping.

Just don't have the time anymore.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 2 points 3 months ago

Yeah. I have an old truck that I’d love to work on but I live in an apartment and am broke as hell.

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 2 points 3 months ago

Ball-jointed dolls. I bought a few then changed jobs, and all my future plans went out the window. See also growing orchids and keeping rats.

[–] graycube@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Hot air ballooning is a blast.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

Then it's not a hobby but a dream.

[–] dhhyfddehhfyy4673@fedia.io 1 points 3 months ago

Serious first world problems yo. Smartphones have been an absolute boon to hobbyist photographers. If you remain interested in it, eventually you'll be able to upgrade in quality.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 3 months ago

hate to tell you but over 50 and pretty much the same. My friends that spent a lot of hobbies are single with good jobs. Its not just money but time eventually.
