I currently have a Redmi note 10 5G. It has 4gb + 3gb of RAM (RAM extension feature) which is not even that bad.

But still for some reason my system just feels bad in general. Apps just stop working when in background which is really annoying when I need to multitask. I have seen phones with the same ram as mine (less if you the 3gb from memory extension) which just work so much better. And I am begging to think it must be something about MIUI.

Will that get any better once Hyper OS comes around? Or do you think I should just install a custom ROM? If the second option is the best, what should I install now that custom roms are not so popular? Also os there any way to install other OSs? I for example like how Huawei's Harmony OS looks, is it even possible?

I'd highly recommend switching away from Miui. You can find custom roms here on xda

Why Miui sucks:

  • Like you already noticed, their battery optimization is way to aggresive
  • They're invading your privacy everywhere possible
  • Battery lifetime sucks royaly (Evolution X rom & Android 14 increased my battery endurance by about 140%! That's insane)
  • Stock apps have ads
  • It heavily cripples performance (slow app loading times, etc)
  • Some simple customisations are flat out impossible (for example, you can't use any custom launcher without fully breaking gesture navigation, setting your lockscreen wallpaper only works with Miuis stock Gallery/Themes app)

Xiaomi currently still is quite friendly towards unlocking bootloaders, so take advantage of it. Try something like Lineage or Pixel Experience.

Lineage OS is so smooth made my Redmi Note 9 such a pleasant experience. Although I woulf recomend flashing the forked version with MicroG bundled to be able to use google apps.

Just sounds like you have battery optimizations on. Thats the default

This is just a Miui thing, this is issue isn't present on custom ROMs like LineageOS
