The great lie of the three estates of the manorial system was that it was the peasants who did most of the fighting and dying.
Because in the ancien regime higher officer positions could only be held by nobility and the "Nobility of the Sword", those who could trace their lineage back hundreds of years and claimed to be warrior stock, did not enter military service in sufficient numbers, an entirely new class of nobility was invented "Military nobility" who were people who could be ennobled for the purpose of serving as army officers. Anyway because the limits to becoming military nobility were so strict, as the nobility of the sword were already mad as hell about nobles appointed by the king in return for money or service, only a handful of guys were ever made military nobility.
