Why do we need registered AppStores? We already have appstores like the one by Amazon, Samsung, etc. I'm not craving more Google sanctioned appstores I crave MRE google not sanctioned appstores where I can install the apps from which Google does not approve of.

This is due to the Epic lawsuit, the app store will be treated as an actual "app store" rather than a standard app which will have its own advantages

In fact any registered app store will basically have an almost play store like experience I suppose rather than having the standard extra resistance provided when you install an app currently

will basically have an almost play store like experience

pro tip: they won't

they'll be full of spammy ai slop so it'll be pretty close

That is impossible because Google will be legally required to make these changes as part of the Epic lawsuit. They have already lost the case to the Supreme Court and they have kind of settled with Epic before the court made a decision. If they back out then Epic will absolutely kill them in court again.

Technically they can make these changes in US only but that would probably be too much to make basically 2 different OS for US and ROW

Not only it's possible it's the only thing that will happen. google will do everything in their power to make them as hard to use is humanly possible. Lawsuits take years.

This is the result of an already years long lawsuit. Google can't drag it for long, in fact initially they were given only 2 weeks after the decision to implement this but like I said they've settled with Epic to make these changes from Android 17 onwards

[–] nesc@lemmy.cafe 1 points 3 weeks ago

So they can't drag for long yet they can drag it however long they need as long as enough money exchanged? 😺

"easier to use"

shows a flow chart with multiple convoluted steps vs how it works now where you just check "allow installing from unknown sources" in the apps permission

I feel like this is part of the reason for limiting sideloading to regestered developers.

[–] wildbus8979@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No this is Google trying to avoid an anti trust lawsuit as they remove sideloading.

[–] Steve@communick.news 2 points 3 weeks ago

Well yah. That's another way to say the same thing.
They wanted to get rid of sideloading for some time.
Now this gives them a valid excuse.
So they take advantage of the lawsuit forceing them to do one thing, in order to do a related thing they've already wanted to do for some time.

Wow the whitewashing after the backlash. How can I think objectively when Google is so insultingly playing with my emotions? I'll stop reacting to these Android posts now because I'm just going to look like a bot paid by Apple then.

I hope fdroid gets registered
