Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

Translated transcript

A young [Norwegian] man has been sentenced [to jail time] after playing this game.

A Japanese video game includes animations which the Norwegian Police describe as "sexual abuse material". Stavanger Aftenblad^[Stavanger Aftenblad (or just Aftenbladet, "The Evening Paper") is a Christian-conservative tabloid owned by Schibsted, who also own VG. Stavanger Aftenblad is a regional newspaper for Rogaland County in Norway's southwest. The administrative center and largest city of Rogaland County is Stavanger, which is the third biggest metropolitan area in Norway after Oslo and Bergen.] reports that the man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, first and foremost for having shared extremely violent sexual abuse material, but also for having played this PC game.

The game's plot revolves around the player taking care of an orphaned child, and can be played in seven different modes. Modes 1 through 6 involve child sexual abuse, while "mode 0" omits any sexual abuse. The man claims he played "mode 0".

The game in question is legal in a number of countries, but the District Court for South Rogaland has asserted that the game constitutes sexual abuse material "without a doubt". The man's lawyer says that the verdict will be appealed.

You can always find the news on VG.^[VG (short for Verdens Gang, "The Course of the World") is the second-most read print newspaper in Norway and the number one most read online news publication in Norway. It is an Oslo-based liberal-but-party-unaffiliated tabloid owned by Schibsted, who also own Aftenposten, Norway's most-read newspaper.]

Extra information

Other information I can find about this story reveals that:

  • The man was 24 years old at the time.
  • The man was sentenced back in August, but news coverage of the case is only really starting now.
  • The man was reported to the Norwegian Police by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), a nonprofit headquartered in Northern Virginia and primarily funded by the United States Department of Justice.
  • The man's IP address was reported by NCMEC for sharing CSAM, and not for downloading the game in question; the Norwegian Police only found the game while they were already investigating the man for sharing CSAM.
  • The game is an example of a "doujin game", i.e. a self-published game created by hobbyists.
  • The game's title includes the word "slave", which I think casts even more doubt on the man's claim that he was playing the supposed "abuse-free" version.

This story has naturally gone viral among "muh censorship" weeaboo nonces. Equinaturally, the story as told by "muh censorship" weeaboo nonces to themselves has ended up getting telephoned into an exaggerated version, because they'd rather wallow in an oppression narrative than do any actual research.

The version of this news story circulating among 4chan types differs from the actual story in a few key respects:

| Actual story | 4chan retelling | |

|

| | The man was sentenced to 3 months in jail | The man was sentenced to 3 years in prison | | The man was arrested first and foremost for sharing CSAM | The man was arrested only for playing the game | | NCMEC reported the man for uploading CSAM | NCMEC reported the man for downloading the game |

I have previously shared a story of a 21-year-old Englishman being arrested in Ireland for playing a different Japanese CSA game.

I have also translated an NRK article from several years ago about the illegality of anime-style drawings of CSA in Norway.

I have also written about the Norwegian government's therapy chat service for pedophiles.

In conclusion

This brought back bad memories. I remember this shit on pornhub, encountering it as an adolescent. Makes me kinda ill now that I know it's suppose to be an underage character.

Good these kinds of games should be illegal

Yes actually, censor that shit. Launch it into the sun. The fuck is wrong with people that they want to make or play a child abuse simulator?

Weebs want to bring back the Haye’s code and take the edge out of everything. Why should they get special treatment? Tired of straight male sexuality being seen as classy, but everyone else is a perv.

Kkkrapitalissm sustains itself off the blood and tears of abused children and needs to construct a flexible gaggle of bastards to do the dirty work, I guess. A game about sexually abusing an orphaned and enslaved little girl is pretty blatantly a power fantasy for those who think adult women "don't know their place these days" — and yeah, that's "art" alright, at least if we understand "art" to be a product of a subculture, which serves to reflect, develop, and propagate the subculture's values.

It's just that the values in question here are fucking wretched and should not be propagated.

they're whining about the left being too authoritarian on this case. You don't hate these people enough

taking care of an orphan child with 7 levels of abuse

Am not surprised 4chan defending that

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

Uhm ackshyually it's not "7 levels of abuse" it's only 6 levels of abuse and 1 level of no abuse which totally makes this fine ackshyually libertarian-approaching

(tone description: this is sarcastic)

4chan: “ThInK oF tHe ChIlDrEn….wait, I like this! Uhh…only other people can be perverts, okay?!?”

I know this game.
Like I haven't played it because ew, but I know this specific game in question.
The plot is that you purchase a child slave and then adopt her, and then either just dress her up and feed her pancakes or have sex with her.
I remember because the concept of a game either being about rampant child abuse or rescuing a child slave seemed so entirely messed up that it kind of blew my mind. It's up there with that nintedo DS game where you molest witches and Harvester in terms of game concepts that just scarred their way into my brain.

I learned the Japanese word for "slave" because it was in the title of some obscure based-on-a-true-story 1968 live action movie^[Referring to the movie Slave Factory, JP: ドレイ工場 Dorei Kôjô, RU: Завод рабов Zavód rabóv, ET: Orjade Tehas. Also known in English as Dorei Kojo and Dray Factory. Here's a clip from the movie, without subtitles.] about a labor uprising at an iron works… So yeah, guess we can thank obscure postwar Japanese leftist cinema for my ability to read The Child Sex Slave Game's title in Japanese and just go catgirl-disgust

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The film sounded interesting up until I looked at the link and holy fucking shit 7h47

Seven Samurai was borderline too long at iirc ~3.5h, and that's famously one of the best films ever made, I am not watching a film I have never heard of for more than twice that!

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Slave Factory has a runtime of 2 hours and 23 minutes according to both MDL and IMDb. I think you might've gotten it confused with a different movie, or misread something.

Edit: Oh wait no I see now, it says 7 hr. 47 min. in the little infobox in the corner, but then it also says "144 [minutes] (Theatrical release) and 164 minutes (DVD)" in the plot description…? Somebody fucked something up in any case, I refuse to believe this movie is nearly eight hours long. Letterboxd also says "143 mins".

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

You should watch seven samurai though, especially if you've seen magnificent seven. I was blown away by how Kurosawa achieved at least as good a movie 10+ years earlier, in black and white, with far less advanced tech. No dolly shots, barely any zooms, b&w film, and it's still incredibly good.

Ofcourse the lamergate crowd among others is putting their capes on for this fucking shit.

[–] Moidialectica@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At this point I just hope it's played as a person trying to help the orphan and not... You know... Even though it's definitely the opposite of what I'm thinking...

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

That's what the arrested guy would like us to think, but when he was arrested for sharing CSAM I won't believe him for a second when he insists he wasn't doing noncy shit in a noncy game.

And besides, to quote Lovdata's English translation of §311 of Norway's Penal Code,

[…] This provision does not apply to depictions [of child sexual abuse] that must be regarded as justifiable for artistic, scientific, informational or similar purposes. Nor does this provision apply to any film or videogram that the Norwegian Media Authority has by prior review approved for commercial screening or sale.

…The District Court in this case, evidently, does not find the depictions in the game in question to be "artistically justifiable". — Which is an "I know it when I see it" type ruling, sure, and people can criticize that type of ruling all they want, but these types of laws really do work best when they have enough "wiggle room" to shut down any sophistry that nonces might use to defend themselves in court.
