Seemed "fine" for what it was, moderately edgy "adult" cartoon that teens could watch because its not that "bad". Family guy levels of bad maybe. (Bad used here as in my conservative grandma would be mad if 15 year old me watched it, can't really say if actually bad. Definitely somethings some reasonable people would object to.)
Just watched an interview with Jerry Beck of Steamline Pictures when he was trying to get distribution for Akira in the US and he'd keep saying it's an animated film for adults and he'd show it to executives and as soon as the first gore happened they'd stop watching it and say "I can't show this film, there's no one (i.e. children) I can show this too."
