Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed
- on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons)
- on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
- on Hungary: Euronews
Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com
(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)
Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org
i was in the uk at the time and the only people in my circles who were pro-brexit where the same idiot racist conservative types that would have voted trump in the us. they had no idea what the fuck was going on about anything
oh there were a bunch of rich people who were certain it was going to be grand for them.
they're not so vocal these days.
Yeah no shit. Every single one of these nationalist pro-us movements are started by state sponsored actors from enemy nations, which is why social media should have always been regulated like broadcast media, but greedy geriatric fucks decided money was more important than voters and national stability.
enemy nations
It was, and is, Russia.
geriatric fucks
Mr. Zuckerberg is quite healthy (unfortunately)
russia is one of the sole backers of nationalist governments and right wing groups in EU and around the world, hence why you see them all suddeny rise at once recently, and also they start spouting the same propaganda verbatim.
Cambridge Analitica was mainly funded by wealthy Americans.
Not state sponsored, but the elites of that nation are certainly an enemy of Britain, Brits and even the rest of Europe and Europeans.
PS: As a side note, who could forget Steve Bannon coming to Europe with money from amongst others the Koch brothers, stating very openly it was to "fund the Far-Right in Europe". Notice how the Far-Right did in fact grow in the following years.
it took them 10 years to say finally it wanst worth it? and not because it was pushed by russia propaganda.
10 years? Brexit was only... (looks up brexit vote date)
Oh man... why you gotta make me feel old?
seems to happen around the same time 2016 election of us going, putin was definitely going for maximum diruption around election time.
They thought it would get rid of the non-whites but there are still non-whites.
Now they want the military deployed to get rid of them.
The majority that believed the people that we needed Brexit have pivoted, but now believe the same people telling them to look at a few migrants as its "clearly" their fault, so long as we don't look at taxing the rich though.
oh yea when greece was sinking migrant boats, people were trying to distract it from missing titan exlorer submersible that imploded on reddit, russia was pushing pretty hard on r/worldnews for the anti-immigration angle, they dint want people to suddenly forget about being anti-immigration and no the imploded sub, that was dominating the news.
titan exlorer submersible

brexit - 31 January 2020 (voted on in 2015!)
lmao - or is it too soon for that? π
watching the US and UK both slap themselves in the face with trump & brexit has got to be satisfying to so many.
sucks to have to live through it first hand though.
We would take you back into the EU :)
I would vote against. I dont want them slowing done European progress again. Unless, they come back without parliamentary power (alongside what others already mentioned). Maybe let's gove them a Switzerland status for a trial period.
But no special treatment this time. Regular member.
Yes, but the UK would have to switch to the Euro, and they wouldn't get the rebate on their EU contribution. Maybe we could also require they completely switch to metric. And what the hell, drive on the correct side of the road.
And finally, and I cannot express how important this is, they would have to have the hot and cold water come out of a single faucet.
I would give Boris's right arm, and Farage entirely to return to the EU. Brexit was every bit as disastrous as predicted
Brexit doesn't appear in its context. It's simply comparing results to the last survey in 2020. I think the author just saw an opportunity to hate on Brexitβfair enoughβbut you could pick any post-2020 event and it wold be just as true.
The survey mostly addresses social and cultural topics; hardly anything relatable to Brexit
The imbeciles were sold brexit on the basis of national pride however.
The imbeciles are voting stock like everywhere else. The important question is why the British elite deemed it necessary to leave the EU.
Major EU Offshores law coming (e.g. Panama papers are from 2016, buttcoin also started going then)...but it was also the time that the "rest of the world"^TM^ reached more than 50% web penetration...lots of things happened then to create the incentive and make possible the then new tools of manipulation to subvert elections.
What does this mean? That the offshoring industry can be profitable by working with the rest of the world?
~~offshores~~ (sorry, I meant tax havens) like the Virgin Islands
