Ok fine, let’s say he truly did have a change of heart and is now a good lefty. Here’s the thing about making choices like that and then apologizing: forgiveness isn’t owed. There will be people who you will permanently be cut off from because of your choices and there’s no undoing that. Grow up.
And if your redemption is 100% conditional on if you will be forgiven and not being forgiven sends you crying back to the fascists, then you truly didn’t have a change of heart and you mostly care about some people just not being mad at you.
I don't even think most of the anti-Platner left is unconditionally condemning him. I know for a fact there is not a single organization in Maine that would turn him away for his past if he offered to help with their work (which is maybe a problem itself but that's a digression). He has never done that though. He has never tried to make amends for his imperial crimes and is in fact quite proud of them. He has never put himself at the service of a left wing organization. He hasn't even tried to cultivate a political career. Instead of doing any of this, he has declared himself redeemed of his sins and that he should now be the face of the left.
I personally could forgive him if he earned it. I see no reason anyone should though.

We should probably forgive the soldiers who renounce imperialism and accept them as comrades, but I don't think they should get to be political representatives.
Who is "we"? Yeah, I'm ready to forgive a soldier who had a genuine turn of heart, but I live in the imperial core and was never affected by their violence. I would not expect anyone from the global south to do the same.
