Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

There aren't many things you CAN'T do that with.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Almost like it's their intended purpose.

PSA: Don't give scented candles to your friends who keep invertebrate pets. There is some evidence that aerosolized scents can cause dyskinetic syndrome, which is a terrible way to go.

Rather a niche warning, but good looking out.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago

because the volatine chemicals have aromatic compounds, or alcohols in it.

Cats have spines but are bendy... Hmmm...

[–] spongebue@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If I don't like them it's probably because it's scented and makes my allergies go nuts 😟

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Set them on fire outside? Safety.

They're a terrible gift. I have a zillion candles they I keep around and can't quite get around to throwing away

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You could burn them... In a big pile....

Do it outside so the smoke goes up into the sky to become stars.

[–] Monzcarro@feddit.uk 6 points 2 months ago

That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about stars to dispute it.

i have irritant-induced asthma and if there's a lit candle in the room with me I breathe significantly worse and have to cough a lot

scented is very noxious, because they have chemicals in it to volatilize the scents. usually aromatic carbons(benzene structure) or alcohols.

My mother-in-law keeps giving me scented candles for my birthday. I'm happy to receive them because it's one less thing she has to worry about - what do I want for my birthday? Scented candles.

They all end up in the charity shops but she doesn't need to know that. :)

[–] Monzcarro@feddit.uk 5 points 2 months ago

They are consumables so you can just say you used the up if anyone asks.

As a person who is difficult to buy for (not because I want special things but because I don't really want anything), candles are ideal as I either like them and use them, or can say I did. Much better that something I am expected to wear or constantly display in my home.

I like giving bacon scented candles to my vegan friends to remind them of what they’re missing.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That would fall under the category of a dick move.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Is it a dick move if they’re vegan bacon scented candles though?

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

But you called the original comment and I quote a dick move so I thought it was up to you?

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's always up to the receiver how a gift is accepted.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So why did you unilaterally decide that a bacon scented candle to a vegan is a dick move?

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You seem to be under the impression my opinion counts for anything. You should stop that.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I care about your opinion.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh his dick moved, alright.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Most of the candle is designed very specifically so that it will not, in fact, catch fire and burn.

[–] Natanael@infosec.pub 3 points 2 months ago

Not with that ~~attitude~~ timescale

[–] kubok@fedia.io 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If you give me a candle as a present, you are not my friend anymore.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

If I give you a candle as a present, I was never your friend.

[–] Shigeko_Kageyama@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

And they never go bad so you can just slap a new label on the gift and give it to someone else next Christmas
