“You tell us what your salary expectations are.” really just means “low-ball yourself because you’re scared and we know damn well it’s hard to communicate with other candidates.

Tell me what you’re willing to pay and we can go from there. Tell your employees what that position pays, and have that be available. There is ZERO reason not to unless you’re actively trying to hide something from the people you’re exploiting.

And a message to anyone who thinks it’s ok and isn’t even benefitting from it: Shove a hot poker up your ass, idiot.

Yeah, it taints the entire relationship right from the start. So when you know they've already messed it up, keep that in mind: it's your best way to get a raise right off the bat if you play the same game.

Spend your energy finding your next position in a competing company.

You have to ask for the money. No one is going to throw it at your feet.

Job before last, boss offers me a raise, told him I thought I should be making at least $50K. "I thought I was paying you that? OK, if you feel your work is worth that, I'll get with payroll and see where we currently are." Got a fatter raise.

Hell, even working a shit job at Lowe's had me an offer on a raise within a few months. Was chatting with the GM in his office one day about a thing I thought should be fixed. He very pointedly told me that if someone working for him felt they were doing a good job and deserved more pay, even if it wasn't time for a scheduled raise, he would be glad to talk about it. HINT. I quit in a huff very soon after that, but at the time we were both trying to get time to meet.

"Fortune favors the bold." True both figuratively and literally.

No. Yearly salary discussions are only common for highly paid professionals. You must be one.

Most people are lucky to get a COL raise each year. Many do not.

I am now, but 20 years ago I wasn't and I still had my yearly performance review and talked to my boss about raises.

It's not about getting a raise, it's about asking for it.

Anecdotally, my biggest raises were also switching jobs, but that's not the point i (or the meme) was making.

So you got a raise every year to either match or outpace the rate of inflation?

Most performance reviews I have had my desire for more pay was dismissed. And they did that because they knew I couldn't easily find something better
