"their choice"

MANN: In this crowded city, it's hard to see the scale of depopulation and rapid aging already underway. But Li works in China's sagging real estate industry, and she says she's already feeling the change.

LI: Housing prices will fall, and the number of home buyers will decrease as well.

Oh no, what a tragedy. (/s)

Chicken and egg scenario. The simplest position is that the economy screwed them first, making it almost entirely impossible to afford to bring up a family.

their choice

it's not really a choice for a lot though, is it?

[–] MrSulu@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 hours ago

I would say that this is correct so long as we have the words informed choice based upon economic realities.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When I see what a hassle having kids is, how stressful it is, the expense, and dire prospects of a good economic future it makes no sense.

The most cynical narcissist will have kids so someone will take care of them in their old age but how likely is that?

I just don't see why I'd want to. It doesn't make sense.

[–] Twongo@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i can barely feed myself. why would i raise a child in hunger?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

This. Its more about shelter for me but yeah can barely keep things together as it is. Then factor in how it looks to be getting worse and worse for each generation and any kids born now are just on the crux of whatever they are going to call the next one.

[–] Tenderizer78@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's true that it's not 100% a choice, but physically there's nothing stopping people from having kids. People are (fairly) prioritizing their financial security over having kids.

Though this may be a comment on abortion. In which case abortion is healthcare and a human right.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not even sure if financial security is even the right term. If you can barely keep food and roof over your head (and healthcare is already not an option) then having children means losing one or the other for yourself and the kids. I mean its not like the ones who want people to have more babies are going to make sure snap benefits are always available much less healthcare.

[–] Tenderizer78@lemmy.ml 2 points 13 hours ago

"Food security" may be a better fit.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you see the nightmare the world has become? Of course they are having fewer kids. Why would you want to bring an innocent life into this horrific bullshit?

[–] Sideshow_B00b@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Luigi the fuck out of the rich and the powerful + Re-distibute wealth fairly (in accordance with Veil of Ignorance) = Birth rate go up

Also not having the world’s most malignant pedophile narcississt predator con man be the US president would be a positive signal to folks thinkng about having kids.

The world is being destroyed, physically, economically, and culturally by a small and malignant infestation of greedy parasites. There is little hope for future so why would people want to bring their children into it?

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I want to have kids but I just can't afford it

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 48 points 1 day ago

Our leaders have abandoned their stewardship of our population in favor of stewarding only the accounts and balance sheets. If human needs are widely neglected the humans will stop reproducing.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Capitalism kills humankind one way or another

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We are pampering pandas in zoos to make them want to fuck. We increase the quality of life for livestock, we add the opportunity to free roaming to chicken farms, etc.

Yet when it comes to humans it's some kind of unsolvable mystery why we don't feel like mating.

Maybe bitching about it on TV might help?

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I definitely feel like mating.

I just don't to reproduce.

Yeah, well. Same. But not what I wanted to say 😂

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

The vasectomy was the best thing I did for my kids.

[–] WalnutLum@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago

It's creating a snowball effect in Japan, as schools, daycares and kindergartens close down it's getting harder and harder to find people to watch kids when people need to work. Most daycares have waiting list and point systems determining how much "need" a set of parents have for daycare because there's not enough of them.

[–] ol_capt_joe@piefed.ee 10 points 1 day ago

Let's just go ahead and transform that dirty old economy then. Rent control, strong antitrust enforcement, safer schools, higher paying jobs, tax the rich, better urban design. Don't nobody want to bring kids into this hellhole.

Predators dont breed in captivity. If you have kids you are sheep /s

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

well i've seen cats breed just fine in "captivity" (i.e. living in a human environment). i think it's a bit more complicated than that
