A community for your defence shitposting needs

Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.

The New York Times reported that fragments that fell from the 155mm shell landed on vehicles parked on a ramp on Interstate 5 – a major artery through southern California – which governor Gavin Newsom had ordered closed after learning that military officials had no plans to close the freeway

No intention of closing the freeway for a live fire exercise right above it.

During the No Kings protest too

Not only did shrapnel fall on I5 generally...

It hit and damaged JD Vance's security detail motorcade.

Like, either this was a stupendous coincidence that a shell went bad and purely accidentally just happened to detonate just so as to literally rain on Vance's motorcade...

... or... this was a kind of not so subtle fuck you buddy from at least one Marine.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/19/us/politics/shell-interstate-5-marines-california.html

A 155-millimeter shell fired during a live-fire demonstration for the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton on Saturday prematurely detonated, dropping fragments of the shell on a California Highway Patrol vehicle and motorcycle that were part of Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail, according to a patrol report.

Yep, thats right, it gets even clownier with more detail.

EDIT:

Ok, this gets even more deepfried clownicized.

So....from seeing more articles with more pictures, I think what happened is this:

Marines do a mock amphib landing on a beach to the west of I5.

From there, they set up mobile 155mm cannons, on the beach... and aim their shots at some part of Camp Pendleton that I guess was cleared off as a ... firing range? Howitzer absorbant sponge zone?

So... yeah, fired from a beach, up and over a cliff, over I5, headed something like east, to land inside some part of Pendleton.

....Does... Pendleton have a preexisting artillery range?

…Does… Pendleton have a preexisting artillery range?

Pendleton covers almost 200 square miles and has ranges for just about every ground-based weapon the USMC uses.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Ok, thanks for that, did not know.

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 75 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Wait, these fucking idiots were shooting live heavy artillery over fucking Interstate 5? One of North America’s biggest and most important arteries.

And they wanted to do that without closing the roadway down?

Jesus Christ. This is an administration of complete idiots.

5 hour detour some reported

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I genuienly think this was not really a mishap, it was literally intended as an intimidating show of force against SoCal.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Got it in one, and literally what I was saying since this plan was announced. This is military parades all over again - "see this shit? It can literally be in your front yard if you keep up".

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

NEWSOM mysteriously closed it a few days ago, he knew before it was released to the news why the reason.

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Did you read the article?

The New York Times reported that fragments that fell from the 155mm shell landed on vehicles parked on a ramp on Interstate 5 – a major artery through southern California – which governor Gavin Newsom had ordered closed after learning that military officials had no plans to close the freeway.

[–] ArbitraryValue@sh.itjust.works 45 points 1 month ago (5 children)

“If Gavin Newsom wants to oppose the training exercises that ensure our Armed Forces are the deadliest and most lethal fighting force in the world, then he can go right ahead,” Martin said.

Not just the deadliest. The most lethal too!

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

Also the highest crayon consumption per capita. Oorah or something.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 15 points 1 month ago

Everyone knows that unless you're shooting over the heads of your own citizens it really isn't training.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

Fatalist and killingest too boot.

From the department of redundancy department.

Maximum efficiency!

[–] eldoom@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah yeah. So, just curious, when was the last time our armed forces won a war?? Like by themselves and not with a ton of our allies? I bet they've won a lot of wars.

[–] ArbitraryValue@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

First, having a lot of allies is strength, not weakness.

Second, with that in mind, the last American-led major conflict that ended with the unambiguously successful attainment of America's major goals was the first Gulf War, but the failures since then in Iraq and Afghanistan had nothing to do with the military bring insufficiently deadly. Killing people is a tool for winning wars, but not the only tool and often not a sufficient tool.

[–] eldoom@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

Oh I think having allies is a good thing. America just seems hellbent on scorning them at the moment.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

I think it'd be easier to list off the wins than the losses so let me give it a go. Gulf war, Korean war (I'm gonna county a tie as winning), WW2, WW1, Spanish-America war, Indian wars (not good but still a series of wins), Civil war, war of 1812 (success but not all war goals met), Revolutionary war. Not gonna count the French Indian war for this one. Any I missed?

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Absolute fucking clown show.

Why on earth would you fire live artillery as part of a drill? What were they thinking?

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 month ago

The vast majority of training rounds for artillery are still explosive or have a slow burning charge for the purpose of spotters being able to practice... spotting. Think smoke grenade like rounds and so forth. And those can, and will, malfunction.

It is one of many reasons that it is important to remember that a gun is a deadly weapon whether it is firing "Training rounds" or "less than lethal" ammunition. A shockingly high number of babies have been killed by flashbangs and even smoke grenades over the years.

And... that is why you don't fucking fire a gun in the direction of anything you care about. Which, to be fair. is a rule that trump actually obeyed in his own psychopathic way.

And all those brave men and women who are totally going to stand up when an unlawful order comes on down had no problem firing it at potential civilians either.

[–] finitebanjo@piefed.world 5 points 1 month ago

I don't usually presume Vance or Hegseth do a lot of thinking.

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It wasn't a drill though. It was a celebration for the anniversary of the marines (pretty sure it was the marines).

[–] Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Its both right and wrong to say it was a celebration. The drills they were doing were part of the celebration. Same way airforce does airshows

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Let me guess: The people who ordered this "excercise" were not military, but political, right?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

KEGSBRETH, probably testing it out on civilian area just in case.
