Nothing would make me happier than the US being held to account by a guy named Petro

2040: the world financial system is dominated by the Petrodollar. No, not that petrodollar

USA: I AM the Security Council.

Donald Trump should be brought up on War Crimes. The ICJ should issue a warrant for him

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 23 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Will never happen, America gives complete protection for its military to commit as many international war crimes and not face punishment under fear of invasion.

Hopefully we can give his ass the boot and then have him tried on the world stage. And this point I'd be down for someone to just whack him, I'm fucking over this shit.

The US isn't part of the ICC and has veto power in the UN. The US is quite literally above the law and there isn't anything anyone can really do about it.

[–] Mangoholic@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Why don't all states kick them out then or just recombine into a fair new UN, seems necessary.

[–] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Because the real power of the US isn't the ICC exemption or the UN SC veto, but their six thousand nukes and the biggest navy in the world.

And the fact that the US dollar is the basis for most economies.

In fact, a new UN wouldn't even be necessary, instead everyone would just have to stop recognizing the veto powers of any country. But, again, that comes with other consequence.

As an American, please do. Some humility would do us good.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

Haw haw, they'll just write a law to exempt themselves.

[–] Dogyote@slrpnk.net 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Would that have any result? Couldn't the US, being on the security council, simply veto whatever resolution was put forward?

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

I think the ICC is somewhat independent of the security council. Still part of UN I believe… I think they indicted Dick Cheney maybe back in the day.

After looking it up, I believe I am wrong… i think they were considering it though

US is not party to the ICC and has a standing policy to invade the Hague and end the eu if the icc detains or tries a single american citizen for any crime.

You're probably thinking of ICJ here, ICC is a western kangaroo court.
