I was so confused by the name "Nothing". Really not a great idea to use a pronoun for a company name.

[–] Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world 38 points 2 weeks ago

It's better than nothing.

[–] BootLoop@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 weeks ago

Also blame the author for putting "Nothing" as the first word which is confusing with the capitalization. Even better they could throw "manufacturer" or "phone maker" in there first so you know exactly what they mean.

Same here, seems like nobody learned nothing from the odyssey.

Apple's Magsafe. You don't have to support apple's magsafe. Qi2 is a standard. Supporting that should be good. Accessories which target Qi2, and creating those would be much better.

[–] rowdy@piefed.social 16 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, this is such a β€˜nothing’ article. The new Pixels have the Qi2 magnets and they work with MagSafe products just fine.

surely a licensing fee would be a lot less

A license fee for using a magnet to hold something? Really?
How is this any different than using refrigerator magnets?

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You're using fridge magnets without paying royalties?!?

I'm sure there's a patent troll that will be sending you a sternly worded letter soon.

did you know almost all electricity is generated by a patented apple technology, magnets?

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Please don't tell them I also use magnets for kitchen knives.
I also made a magnet bar for my Danish Design tools for the fire-wood stove.

I swear the Nexus 5 had magnets long before apple even had wireless charging.

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Palm Pre did it first. Apple copied.

Yes, they did. I still have that somewhere. Best phone ever made.

[–] Spider89@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Nexus 5 had magnets?

I have one and I don't see any magnets? Only a coil..

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I can't find any official documentation right now, but there are some references to it.

Maybe the magnets were in the charger and the phone just had some ferrous material?

And like that other guy said, the palm was another 4 years before that.

My folding phone has magnets, but they're not used for charging. I assume they're used to detect if the phone is folded or not.
