Is this calculated as liters of pure alcohol? Like 17.1 L would actually be 42.75 Liters of 40% or 80 proof vodka, or is it some other measurement?

[–] retrolasered@feddit.uk 18 points 3 months ago

I recon so, as a brit I feel like those numbers are pretty low if its counting the entire beverage

[–] Godort@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I was about to question that.

Because if you're drinking tall boys, thats less than 1 beer per week

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago

I mean, you do have to account for big parts of the population not drinking, like children and older folks...

Namibia also punches well above its weight in heavy metal bands, which is probably not a coincidence

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Gonna be real, I think both can be related to the fact Namibia was once a German Colony.

Came here to say the same

I'm shocked the UK didn't make the list. They seem so much more of alcoholics than the Austrians

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

same with russia.

A pint or large glass of wine a day is about 10L per year, so yeah, given someone who doesn't drink alcohol is cancelled out by someone who drinks two pints a day I'm very surprised these numbers aren't bigger

interesting that US is #20 per capita and china is #46, yet china is still double the states in total consumption

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I mean China has like 4 times the US population. Is it really that surprising?

[–] U7826391786239@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 months ago

no. i said "interesting," not "surprising"

[–] Cobrachicken@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Would've thought Australia is way higher on that list.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Wow I drink 17.1L every two weeks, lmao.

[–] Asetru@feddit.org 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Certainly not pure alcohol.

[–] BilboBargains@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Drinking is so last season

I'm guessing a vast majority of the world doesnt have good data regarding this with how much of it is illegal. Especially in Islamic nations.

[–] Corigan@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago

Metrics are different And not applicable excessive vs amount so that's my bad.

[–] Corigan@lemmy.zip -1 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Lol, compare it to Wisconsin.

[–] relativestranger@feddit.nl 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

when based on alcohol content consumed and not just quantity of beverage, wisconsin doesn't even rank among the top five u.s. states (which are nh, de, nv, nc, and mt. dc would rank second if it was one). src. one of many found

[–] Corigan@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Interesting

Not sure why I'm getting downvoted for wanting to compare some populations.

From my understanding and some data I've seen Wisconsin has many of the drunkest counties in the country (but to your point I guess not at the state level).

Also the 3rd highest bar to people per capita in the us Data
