This will make it much easier for the Qatari air force to carry out their combat air patrols over Montana.

That was likely part of the price the Qataris wanted to put pressure on Hamas to accept Trump‘s deal. Worth it.

You only wish this was the final boss of “imagine if Obama did it.” Trump could cook and eat a baby on live tv and his cult would call it a bold tactic to own the libs.

Ethics/morality aside, it's a pretty smart financial move to sell goods and services to multiple sides of a prolonged conflict. Sure, some of them might figure it out and bomb an iconic skyscraper in a major city, but what's a few thousand peasant lives against the billions of dollars that could be gained?

Last time it happened, we got a decade of oil out of it. Not a bad deal to be honest. I'm not sure how it works though, if it's 10 years per event or 5 years per tower.

Forgive my ignorance, but aside from being an ally and sharing tech, training and whatnot, why does Qatar want an air base in idaho?

[–] mhague@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It's normal for other nations to have a sub-base for training them on our products, alliances & soft power, etc. I think in another timeline, this is problematic because it's another shady ally. But with Trump, you have Qatar gifting Trump a jet and then his "no foreigners in 'merica!" voters having to suddenly say things like "actually, it's normal to have foreign militaries here."

To have a foothold in North America when the US balkanizes?

[–] Ougie@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The Balkans were "balkanized" by the US remember, they didn't self destruct... And besides, betting so much money at this point in time on Idaho seceding to become an empty landlocked country is a far fetched scenario even for a strategy game 😅

And now the US is being balkanized by the US :P

Are they the ones that bribed him with a plane or the ones that bribed him with crypto? I can't keep up.

I really don't yet see what the strategic interests being served in this are. An airbase in the US is a strategic liability for Qatar, and just a weird thing for the US that seems unnecessary. I've yet to read a really good analysis of this, but it's a really remarkable turn of events. Whatever is behind it, I would like to understand.

Probably has to do with human smuggling but I dont want to start any conspiracies.
