And that will end the use of Android for me.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 14 points 6 months ago

Same. That is the do-not-cross-line. One of them.

What's the alternative though?

Well yes, linux phones are great

But its kinda the same as opting out of Gservices, you gotta find a new Linux native app for everything for it to work smoothly

Which, for once is great since libadwaita and qt has great scalability, so most linux apps already look great on Linux mobile

But if you depend on Android native apps, you cant really expect more from Waydroid as you do from wine

in other words: No IGN, you cant just boot into a linux phone and complain that you cant download Instagram from the Play store

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Well yeah, but do FOSS enthusiasts generally want to use mainstream apps like Instagram anyway?

Ish? It's something most people might have heard of, and it's not in F-Droid.

[–] sorghum@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 months ago

Molly is though

[–] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 months ago

thats why my whole rant was pointed at people working and/or having the same amount of brain wrinkles as IGN employees

Because yes, most mainstream people are just like this when reviewing Google less phone OSs

[–] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don't care about mainstream apps, but sadly I have to care about my bank and tax office login :(

[–] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Do you need these on the go?

You could just go out of your way and keep an old phone in your closet

[–] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 1 points 6 months ago

When I traves yes.

[–] circledot@feddit.org 3 points 6 months ago

Yeah, I'm very interested in those devices but they don't seem to live up to most users' expectations? But since there's still time maybe there will be Linux phones that may suit as a daily driver.

probably not, but I'm using a cheap android one for that then. IF needed.

There are always their websites.

Hmmm. I don't use any banking apps for 2FA, I guess. How do you mean exactly?

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

When I want to do any transactions on my bank account, I need to verify it with my bank's 2FA app.

That app doesn't work on waydroid (I tried) and needs a "certified" device.

[–] Quibblekrust@thelemmy.club 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Huh. I've never heard of that. I'm in the US, and I only need 2FA to log into the website and then I can do whatever I want. By 2FA, I mean, a standard RSA authenticator app, or just a text message with a code.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 1 points 6 months ago

Yeah, I think that doesn't work with EU banks.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today -2 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Your banking app has its own 2FA?

Switch banks.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 3 points 6 months ago

It's not their own solution, but SecureGo - AFAIK a common third-party 2FA app in Europe

Switch banks.

I don't like your... encroaching tone.

Also: no available bank here supports common FOSS 2FA solutions. All use SecureGo, or something similar.

In Sweden BankID is your login to a lot of services, especially local community ones, the tax office and so on.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 6 months ago

i'd imagine google can't magically enforce this for old versions of android or custom roms, so just keep using that like 90% of us already do..

[–] undefinedTruth@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Since this is going to be enforced through Google Services custom ROMs like GrapheneOS will not be affected. Of course if F-Droid no longer exists, that means we lose the largest centralized repository of open source apps which is a huge blow. There are other ways of installing and updating open source apps like Obtainium. But the big thing with F-Droid is that it also provides discoverability.

I have a linux phone that I haven't been motivated enough to switch over to.
