He didn’t even say the shooter might be MAGA, all he said was that the right was looking to pin this on the left before any details were known to the public. They just imagined that he blamed it on MAGA and got pissed off.

- The FCC threatened to block the Paramount + SkyDance merger unless Colbert was cancelled.
- Then Colbert was cancelled, effective next year.
- Trump then said that Kimmel was next.
- The FCC threatened to block the Nexstar + Tegna merger unless Kimmel was cancelled. Nexstar then told Disney/ABC that they would stop airing Kimmel in the stations that they own and control all over the country.
- Then Kimmel was cancelled immediately.
- Trump has no said that Jimmy [Falon?] and Seth [Meyers] are next...
- Can you guess what will happen next?
Trump the the Republicans are, one-by-one, silencing their most vocal critics and dissenters. They started with news media, then they moved to entertainment media, and from there they will move on to corporate social media next. This is state control of media and blatant censorship of criticism. End of story.
I'm not even exaggerating when I say that the Fediverse will be the last bastion of free speech and political criticism on the internet, because the same pressures that Trump and the Republicans can apply to Paramount and Disney, they can also apply to Reddit, Meta, X, and Oracle. Corporate will ALWAYS capitulate to fascism--they aren't even bothering to fight back--because the only thing they care about in the slightest is money.

.world does the same narrative shaping that legacy-media, facebook, reddit, etc. does and the free speech & political criticism you're hoping will live on will do so in the same way it does now; buried into suppression.
“Fediverse”, not lemmy.world. These hosts can come and go and that makes them slightly more resilient to this sort of censorship. Not each, but as a whole.
very true and i'm glad you've pointed this out.
however i expect defederation to be leveraged to this end like it already has.
That hasn't been my experience so far, but luckily for you, me, and everyone else... The fediverse doesn't rely on any single instance as an unquestionable single channel of information.
If your takeaway from my comment is to criticize the content of any one server (or even any one software), you're missing the point of open source software entirely.
The fediverse doesn’t rely on any single instance as an unquestionable single channel of information.
The fediverse's growth has come at the expense of it's invisiblity to the attention of the us empire and; like TikTok; measures have been implemented on the fediverse, like I described earlier.
Defederation has splintered the fediverse and now the information that used to be shared in niche subreddits are only shared on the smallest of those fediverse splinters, while the people in the largest splinters complaint that the fediverse lacks content like the subreddits do.
I foresee those splinters turning into locked silos once the empire's measures have reached an more advanced stage of development like TikTok did last week, becoming some sort of reverse defensive wall where the mainstream closes thier eyes, stick their finger in their ears, and loudly yell la la la; but en mass. Lol
It's not supposed to make sense. It's supposed to silence dissent from right wing narratives. They are never acting in good faith
All you need to know is from Trumps post about Colbert getting cancelled. He said it there that Kimmel was next.
And in his post about Kimmel he said Fallon and Myers are next.
That’s it. That’s all you need to know. There’s no other rhyme or reason other than the wailing of a sad frail man with way too much power.
Drop any idea that they care about having integrity or following certain principles. They say what they like to wield power at any given time.
They do not care if their behavior or reasoning is inconsistent and they laugh at your confusion regarding it.
The difference is that Kimmel's employer Disney/ABC is owned by a friend of Trump. It's as simple as that.
You got it in 1.
Trump's a wannabe facist, so his crony at the FCC corruptly pressured the employer of a comedian he doesn't like into firing said comedian.
Make note of this, and refer back to it for the next several decades anytime anyone on the right bitches about "cancel culture" or "free speech".
Not sure I'd call him a "wannabe" fascist at this point. Dude is ignoring the constitution, consolidating control over the media, isolating the US culturally and economically, and has picked at least two out groups to pin blame on while sending one (for now) to concentration camps. He's playing blackout on the fascist bingo card and we're less than a year in.
He showed a video of how little trump cared about the death, and that made the admin look bad, so it used the FCC to pressure companies into letting him go. You know, blatantly violating the first amendment.
Cooked like hot beef.
Cannot wait to see what kind of shit Hollywood will crank out as a result of things like this.
It was bad enough when they over-corrected and did lots of stupid shit like Ghostbusters 2016 or Star Wars Acolyte....but now I bet they go complete Gilead and it will get even stupider.
Was Ghostbusters an "over correction" because they dared to make them women?
In a word: no.
It's more nuanced than that, but the discussion around such things is now so polarized that it's hard to have a conversation about things like Ghostbusters 2016. It felt like a big bloated pandering, bandwagon-jumping, uninspired mess and then the marketing and ensuing aftermath of it flopping was that if you didn't like it, the problem is with you the viewer and you need to check your privilege, etc. And that's just nonsense.
If the message is the audience must like a movie/TV show simply because of the demographic makeup of the actors/writers/directors, or else it's the audience that has failed, well then I reject that. And so did a lot of the audience going by the ratings and the amount of money made.
Were there misogynist assholes bitching about how it was going to "ruin their childhoods" and other such claptrap because, ew, giiiiirrrls? Of course. But that doesn't mean the toxic liberal scolds out there telling people they must like this IP were not creating another set of problems...it'd be fine if they tried to reboot the much-loved IP with all-women and it failed and if they quietly said, well, that didn't work, what did we (mostly the writers, I think) do wrong here? But that didn't happen. There was lots of blame-shifting and lectures.
I think the problem with Ghostbusters 2016 can be summed up by the shoehorned dance number.
But that doesn’t mean the toxic liberal scolds out there telling people they must like this IP were not creating another set of problems…
I'm honestly not convinced that these people exist in any real, measurable way. All I remember from that time was people complaining about these woke scolders, but I never encountered a single person who ever even implied that I needed to even watch the movie, let alone like it. That's fucking stupid and not real, sorry.
