How close to other coins does it have to be for eating?
How much gold do we have atm?
Divide coins into pairs of 2. After 1 hour the stack that only has one coin is the evil one. Or the total gold is too much to do this, then create stacks of N and repeat each hour with the stack that shrunk.
The coin is a primitive but sentient being who is only interested in eating gold. Attempting to detect it will make it dormant for an unspecified amount of time
Time to melt down all your gold and recast it, or does that just give you lots of coins that are a bit peckish, rather than one greedy one?

I was thinking that they'd just be a bit nibbly. Every so often, when you reach into your coin pouch wearing a gold ring, you feel something grab your finger. When you pull your hand out, you find a coin clamped on to the ring and growling quietly.

Now we need a pouch for every single coin, for an undefined time, because we can't be sure if we have already spent it.
I was gonna say... this is annoying, and you probably lose a good chunk of gold before you notice, but it's really easy to deal with if you have any amount of downtime

Go to BBEG's town, incur a fine and pay with the coin. Once it gets deposited in their tresuary sit back and wait for the anguish screams as they realize their hoard has vanished.
Their DM, the cycle of abuse continues.
