Does the title imply that everyone will break their current smartphone to buy the new iPhone ?

Some do, but a lot of workplaces provide phones, and some people may "accidentally" break theirs to get a new one.

hearing about the release of a new phone instinctively makes people relax their grip, leading to phones perfectly sensibly flying out of their hands and into woodchippers. it's normal.

No, but when my company says I'm up for a new work phone, it's very cathartic when I'm having a bad day and it has an "accident".
