My mother has a Google Pixel 7, and about six months ago it started getting incredibly hot, and I thought nothing of it, and we've managed to factory reset it, and it worked fine, but now it's doing it again, and after seeing all the issues with the Google Pixel A lineup and catching fire, I'm very concerned, so we are going to replace it.

Well with the new potential requirement Google plans to implement that will require all apps on Googles android devices to be verified and distributed by their system, it may be time to leave Appl- I mean Google all together.

The days of an open android and a non-evil google are almost completely gone.

I hope we don't get there. There's really nothing I can do about it, so I just gotta hope.

This apparently only applies to devices running Google Play Services, so as long as you make sure to buy a device you can put lineage on and do not use gapps you're fine and can use any app you still want.

So much for my friend being able to download new pipe and use YouTube without ads anymore, though.

Would this mean we can't have F-droid and the like?

[–] Matt 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

From what I currently understand, they will need to be approved by Google, so F-Droid and many of the popular apps will likely still be available, but the overall selection will be limited. This will apply to devices with Google Play Services. If you are using a custom rom without Google Play Services, then this change will not affect you.

Man, the enshittification of late is just really exhausting.

Not sure what this means for the 3rd party branches of android

It's a hard choice - I don't like Google, but they're good phones. I really wanted to get something other than a Pixel when I got the battery "recall" for my 4a. Ended up with a used 8 Pro.

They were good phones. I had the Pixel 1 and the Pixel 3a, and they were fine. And then all this crap started happening. At least Samsung only had one phone that exploded.

Google had phones explode? I hadn't heard about that. Samsung is a nightmare for other reasons too so this news sucks.

Well, there's been at least a couple of Google Pixel 6a devices that spontaneously burst into flames while charging.

[–] Dangerhart@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

My wife's pixel, I think a 7a, had the battery issue. It started going from 20% to 0 instantly then the back expanded and smelled like burning. Google replaced the battery but the cracked rear case was not covered... It was less than 1.5 years old

I've consistently had overheating issues with pixels I've had, and then the battery starts bulging and shattering the back of the phone. Unfortunate, because everything else about the phones works well. But I've given up on pixels because of this

[–] shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Can't say as I blame you. I know pixels were good, and I used to use GrapheneOS when I had mine. But now, I won't get one myself, and I'm definitely not going to recommend them again. At least not until Google demonstrates that this has been put behind them for several years.

Her battery may also just be going bad, for what it's worth. My Pixel 5's life was extended by at least 2 years (before taking a free upgrade to a Pixel 9, running stock OS) by a battery replacement. If you're reasonably handy with electronics, it's less than a $100 fix. I don't know what a phone repair shop would charge.

You may not have to replace a whole phone quite yet.

[–] shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Definitely not handy with electronics and a new device has already been ordered and it's case and she's going to use the trade-in program and use it as a trade-in. If it explodes after then, then it's not our problem anymore.
