Self Improvement

446 readers
30 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.

This week was miserably hot, it was 30C in my apartment all week. I had a bunch of stuff to finish before vacation so it was stressful. But I went running on 4 days in a row feral-hog

I am on vacation for the next 2 weeks so improvement will not be a top priority. I can be productive all year but this is the only time when I can do nothing pikmin-chillin

In non-tab news—haven't posted in a while, but my hygiene and sleep schedule has been better in this past month or so than it has perhaps ever. I've also been feeling a lot more socially engaged lately; I'm very out of practice, so it can take a lot out of me, but it's nice to be connecting with people.

On the hobby front, I haven't been playing/analyzing music much, so that's something I'm going to focus on this week. But on the positive side, I've really gotten back in the swing of things with studying Japanese and it feels awesome. It's something I had basically put on pause for a few years, and it feels so awesome to be able to see my comprehension improving noticeably over the course of just a few months, and I've gained the confidence to finally do proper immersion (reading and watching things without any English subtitles).

That's good progress, keep it up! I recently switched to a new phone so I had to close hundreds of tabs. All those tabs lost in time, like tears in rain. What music are you into?

Had a good week, but got a mild injury, so I'm switching from running to biking for cardio for a couple weeks, training for a rugged trail half mara in Sept. I'll continue daily Russian lessons in Mango (free app through the local library), chess practice in lichess, sudoku, and hoping to finish State and Revolution in the next couple of days.

Get some, comrades!

Bought a watermelon at the supermarket instead of beer.

I am learning how to use Emacs in order to use org-mode (in Emacs) for note-taking. Look it up if you haven’t heard of it, it’s pretty cool and been around since the early days of computing

[–] moonlake@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sounds cool, I am in the market for a new note-taking tool so I will check it out. Another comrade recommended Logseq recently

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Incoming brain dump.

Emacs has a higher learning curve because it’s really a whole ass desktop environment. So it’s more to learn than just the note taking program (org-mode) but it’s a useful skill to have long term. Especially if you ever want to write long form technical papers or even fiction, org-mode can export into almost any format (such as LaTeX). A benefit over Logseq is that Eacs is based in plain text files while Logseq is stored in a database. I like the peace of mind that I have total control over my workflow and will never be locked into any single system.

You can basically customize Emacs in any way you can think of, while most other note taking programs have opinionated implementations that are difficult to modify. And since there is both a GUI and terminal based version of Emacs, you can run the same software (with same config file) on any device that can run a terminal. Even remotely over ssh.

One downside to Emacs is that it’s not that useable on mobile. This past February they added native Android support, but it’s still quite basic and hamstrung by the Android security model. However there are apps that can view org-mode files on both Android and iOS.

What they say about getting ripped and only receiving compliments from other guys is 100% true. Luckily I love all the attention so this is still fine.

I did a yoga class for the first time in awhile and really noticed massive flexibility improvements!

Truck should be fixed by tomorrow which means I'll be back on the job hunt. Got my fancy resumes and just need to submit as many as possible. Spent this last idk month kinda floundering but hope that doesn't last. Did some studying some leisure reading and a lot of stressing about transportation, I'll do some sign ups to some state sights for work today.

Trying a new weightlifting routine, going to focus on hypertrophy. I hit 225 once, so it’s time I focused on looking like an anime twunk.

I haven't checked in a couple weeks, but things are still going good.

Still trail running early in the morning. It's completely dark now, which is kind of cool. Feels almost like running inside an orb of light because I can't see anything past what my headlamp hits. Saw a deer twice and we freaked each other out a bit.

I actually weighed myself for the first time in 4 or 5 months. I did gain some weight back, but way less than I thought. I'm at healthy weight, I just don't want to slip back into old habits and lose all the progress I made last year. I'm going to start weighing in once a week just to see how things are going and decide if changes need to be made.
