Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Isn't this mainly an Arch meme? I think most Linux users who have been using it for several years don't go around talking much about it anymore. But I admit the meme kinda does depict mid-teenage me who had recently switched to Linux.

    Akshually its called GNU/Linux πŸ€“

    [–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm still on Windows 10. Sure would love a reason to switch...

    You fucking fiends.

    [–] cute_noker@feddit.dk 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's actually really easy, the best is to start with Linux From Scratch. That's how you get a couple of hours of heartwarming fun and games.

Start on your grandmother's PC she can join the fun

    [–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Great, thanks. But isn't she going to be confused by the lack of anything to click on? She doesn't know how to "hack" or "code" or whatever you Linux brainiacs do lol...?

    [–] cute_noker@feddit.dk 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She will catch right on, just trust my advice. A "mouse" is overrated, I haven't used on in years. Once you memorize the man pages(just a few minutes) should be smooth sailing

    [–] moseschrute@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

    What’s a mouse? I use neovim btw

Gaming on linux is surprisingly good right now. Other than those games that require kernel level anti-cheats, most games work really well.

.... But in case it wasn't clear, the user suggesting linux from scratch is joking. Use Linux Mint or Ubuntu if you're starting your linux journey. Try it on a virtual machine, for instance.

    [–] Hupf@feddit.org 1 points 21 hours ago

Nah I'm happy with my Gentoo box sporting Lutris, just doing some light hearted trolling.

How rich of you to think us Linux users have someone to talk to.

    [–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

That's not correct. I have plenty of people to talk to. They don't talk at me back though.

    [–] Australis13@fedia.io 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Some of us do, but you can see their eyes glaze over the moment you mention Linux...

    [–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Have you heard the good word of our Lord and savior....

    [–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 day ago (15 children)

Good idea. When the Mormons come by, start talking to them about Linux. If they start reading scripture, you start reading man pages.

Can confirm, not a current linux user. I have a DnD group to talk too...

    [–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 1 points 18 hours ago

I use windows and Mac os

    [–] krunklom@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

I feel personally attacked by this post.

    [–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 76 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have to use windows at my new job, and I hate it so much. Have I said that in the last few minutes?

    [–] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thank god I got it out in time.

    Windows sucks balls.

    [–] Johanno@feddit.org 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    I use glorious Nixos.

This is not a recommendation. It is an abusive relationship. Do not install nixos without research.

NixOS is a dangerous drug, but at least it's a drug without side effects, since Nix is purely functional.

I saw this, told my cats, and felt better

    [–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I feel worse because I don’t have cats and you do have cats. It’s a catastrophe.

    • step one: put food bowl out and refill it on a constant schedule
    • there is no step two

    Edit: listing is hard

    [–] StopA@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don’t even need to say it anymore. Every single time a coworker, friend, or family member expresses frustration with Windows in my vicinity, I just shoot them a snarky glance and they preemptively tell me to shut up. ❀️

    [–] Reygle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Holy crap maybe that's why I've been in such a trash mood for a few weeks

    Btw I don't use Arch

Hey guys, I use Linux Mint btw!

I been thinking about trying pop! OS, anyone got reviews?

My brother jokes about this referring to me, but lately he has been noticing the power of Linux and FOSS, he switched to Lichess from Chess.com and immediately noticed the benefits and how the are totally worth the downsides.

He also noticed how quick my system is, and how cool is that I can hibernate my laptop.

I just hope my efforts make them all switch (at least their personal computers) to Linux at some point.

top left pic is the same girl in the meme about the guy watching another girl while walking with her GF ?

    I'm using MX Linux BTW

    [–] M137@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I'm the opposite, I generally don't mention it because I know that I won't be able to keep myself from talking too much about it. If it's someone who's at my place and they ask what I'm using or I just see them looking confused about what's going on when I'm using it I'll gladly show them but never do the whole speech thing about why and why they should too etc.

    [–] Sarcasmo220@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

For Arch users it's only 5 minutes. MX Linux users it's 3 1/2 minutes.

Edit: I actually meant to say NixOS users, but MX Linix users probably feel the same.
