That's such a cute jackdaw!
Here's the thing
His sins are forgiven; will he ever return?
Did anyone ever dox him? I'm betting there couldn't be more names with dan in them that worked as a biology professor (specializing in ornithology, right?) in english speaking countries than could be searched out.
Maybe he lost his job over that as the university received a whole lot more attention on him than ever would have been imagined. That would drive me pretty far away from ever appearing in any sort of publicly way that could let me be doxed again.
I did not know he lost his job over stupid internet points. I mean, he did a kind of minor shitty thing, but losing your job?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unidan
Apparently not. I read the wikipedia page once I learned there was one, thanks klear, and he both continued working on his doctorate and taught after the incident.
Ah ok, that's a better outcome!
What's the context here? I'm completely unaware.
Unidan was a prolific and very well 'liked' (or at least known) poster in the earlier days of reddit, after it had grown out of supreme nerdiness phase and was beginning to be a place where general audiences gathered. He would happily expound on various scientific topics, but was especially keen about biology topics. Whether it became known or he just told folks, he specialized in ornithology (which I've had to look up twice to be sure I'm talking about the right thing) and I think sub-specialized in crows or ravens. Folks would ping him quite often when biology topics would come up, and sure enough, within an hour or two he'd show up and have a several paragraph comment about his perspective/idea.
To make a long story short, he became upset when someone made an offhand comment about 'raven' or 'crow' being close enough when talking about a bird that is black (which I think the bird in question for that comment chain was a jackdaw), and unidan 'lost it.' He quite vehemently corrected the idea that such terms should be thrown around loosely. I personally think his response wasn't all that bad, but it apparently flabbergasted most of the folks who cared about such things. THEN, because his comment was drawing a lot of negative attention, the mods or admins looked closely at it and realized unidan was using a couple of side accounts to immediately upvote his comments/posts (because a burst of quick upvotes would put a large upward shift in the reddit algorithm), and they decided to 'end' the issue by issuing him a ban because of 'vote manipulation.'
Anyway. In my head, the knowledge that this dude likely worked at a university, in an ornithology department, and specialized in crows/ravens, AND had dan in his name somewhere, would mean it wouldn't be hard for an irritated little internet nerd on reddit to dox him. And as we all know: if doxxed, then email/letter/phone-call campaign (the merits of and morality of not being judged here; that's far too complex a topic). So if unidan had been doxxed and then his department/university subjected to an internet-outrage driven campaign, it would follow he wouldn't necessarily want to invite such scrutiny again.
He has a wikipedia page with full name an employment history. I suspect it's less doxing and more than he was never keeping his identity a secret, though I only joined reddit as he was on his way out so I wouldn't know for sure.
Ah, today I learned. Personally I never cared enough to look at anything beyond the comment itself and what people have mentioned of it. I would lose my mind if I ever became notable enough to have a wikipedia page.
Assuming last name is "AllenPoe?"
“Allen Crow”
corvids are allowed two named: edgar and quothe
I mean, you could also use Lenore.
Huggin and Muninn are furious right now. Expect a horse haft to be thrown through your window by the wild hunt.
I'm not comfortable naming ravens that when I have this many eyes
There is a rather simple solution to that. You only need one eye after all.
That's an expensive snack!
Only in places where their price is artificially inflated through fad cuisine. They're really not that tasty, compared to similar nuts — and the latter often do a far better job in various recipes that call for pine nuts. 🤷🏼♂️ Besides, it seems like Edgar has a decent budget allocated for him. Lucky bird. 🤘🏼
What do you use in pesto instead?
Great question! Personally, I use whatever nuts I feel would work best with other flavors in the intended dish, though I prefer pistachios (not always cheap either, but bear with me), hazelnuts (ditto), cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds/pepitas, walnuts (pairs well with mushrooms, red meat [pork is a red meat, FYI], grilled veg, and similar low-tone flavors), etc.
Don't forget, you can simply chuck 'em into the processor raw, or chop them by hand to your desired granularity, but also, here's a fun bit:
You can quick toast them whole beforehand (in a dry skillet on med/high [depending on the nuts], and be sure to keep them gently moving at all times [focus on browning w/o any char —carbon can easily dominate the palate], them spread them out in a single layer on an elevated surface to cool to preserve the oils [pastry paper is fine, but nothing absorbent or it'll rob them of flavor you just improved them with]),
Personally, I feel that it's more important to allow yourself to explore what's available to you locally, and see what you can enjoy on your budget — instead of being told what's "proper" by whatever so-called expert from a cookbook/show/clip.
Food is not only fun AF, but can literally bring people together across all manner of barriers, differences in backgrounds, etc. Let yourself get into it, and have fun! Then, share your newfound freedom and expression with those you cherish. Feed your people, and inspire them to find similar freedom in their lives, too! 🥰👩🏻🍳🌈
