It’s match day!

Been great to discuss the games as they happen throughout the tournament. How are we feeling about this final?

Pretty hard to understand a lot of the reffing decisions, and that was what decided the match... the major one obviously being Cane's card getting upgraded but Kolisi's wasn't

Definitely reminded me why I got bored of watching rugby... so many of the big matches get decided by the officials

I think Frizell's foul play yellow was worse; it wasn't a neck roll (certainly not like the one that was done to Cody Taylor minutes later) and it was a pure accident that he fell onto the SA player's leg.

Agreed, the TMO even acknowledged he fell on the player's leg. It's a full contact sport, people are going to fall over. Maybe a penalty was justified, but a card is ridiculous, even if that's what the rules said.

This turned out to be pretty prophetic (unfortunately): https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/on-the-inside/501189/a-red-card-could-ruin-the-rugby-world-cup-final-the-game-needs-fairer-safer-rulings-on-the-field

Yup, and Barnes rushed to the decision from one angle on a giant TV screen at the other end of the stadium. The subsequent angle played after he had decided it was Yellow was much less bad looking for Frizell; but he'd already decided.

Its been a whole World Cup cycle plus a couple of years now of World Rugby attempting to stamp out head high contacts by dishing out red cards; it has not worked.

Game decided at 2 minutes.

Certainly setting the theme early on!

Bloody better be! Almost carbon copy, no mitigation at all

[-] Axisential@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Oooh, not happy about that

[-] terraborra@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah take back my comment about fair calls. That’s bull. He was still in the air.

Oh, THIS is why the supermarket was so empty this morning, lol.

TMO in charge of the game. Barnes is just a back up enforcement of decisions.

Just a reminder why I stopped really watching rugby. The ref has far too much impact on who wins the game, it's so inconsistent.

Back to cricket for me. Anyone say up to watch the triller against AU last night?

Didn't stay up, but was a fantastic match. Doesn't really hurt our chances of making the semis either...

Pace is incredible, but the discipline is crap. Sooo many penalties.

[-] Axisential@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Red was fair enough. Poor discipline from our boys - they should know better with Barnes at the helm

[-] terraborra@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly I think all the calls have been fair from the refs. We just need to stop making stupid mistakes.

[-] Axisential@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Absolutely. Those lineouts have been embarrassing!
