Over the last few days, Thailand and Cambodia entered into a heightened stage of conflict due to a long-running border dispute. Like many problems on this planet, Europeans are ultimately to blame - specifically France. Certain sections of the border drawn up by France about a century ago were not fully agreed upon by both sides, with the ownership of some Khmer temples being the most visible points of disagreement.

Despite interventions in favor of Cambodia in the 1960s and later 2010s by the ICJ - one of the mainly mostly useless global institutions that liberals periodically disown - the border conflict has simmered at a generally low level. Of the two countries, Thailand is significantly more militarily and economically powerful.

Last Wednesday, a Thai soldier lost his leg by stepping on a landmine, prompting a rapid escalation between Cambodia and Thailand that has since resulted in dozens of deaths and tens of thousands displaced. Cambodia was willing to come to the negotiating table fairly quickly, but Thailand was more hesitant. International pressure on the two countries by Malaysia, China, and the United States eventually forced Thailand to the table, and they have recently agreed to an immediate ceasefire courtesy of ASEAN.

Notably, Trump refused to hold trade talks with either country until they agreed to peace, which suggests that he really wants a Nobel Peace Prize - which he seems a shoe-in for given that he's met the two most important requirements that several Nobel Peace Prize recipients have needed to meet in the past, which are: 1) start at least one war, and 2) accelerate the genocide of millions of people as billions more people watch on. His policies vis-a-vis ICE creating a domestic terror regime only further increase his chances of winning the prize.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. @SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net requesting that "Israel-Palestine Conflict" please be changed to another header along the lines of "Israel's genocide of Palestine" or "The Palestinian Genocide". Especially when there is "Russia-Ukraine Conflict" written immediately after, its just not comparable. *I know you don't have any bad intentions, this will just send a very firm message about where this website stands (against genocide).

Israel-Palestine Conflict

"Israel's genocide of Palestine" would be more accurate, "conflict" or "war" are euphemisms for what is really going on. It isn't a "conflict" when its soldiers shooting starving civilians at aid distribution points.

wait, so Western rearmament is all just loans? https://archive.ph/6wP75 (yesterday's episode in this saga: https://hexbear.net/comment/6366482)

Poland Gets New U.S. Loan for Weapons, Plans to Use It to Upgrade its F-16 Fighter Jets

U.S. gives Poland new FMF loan to keep key arms buyer — funds will go to F-16 upgrades, helicopters, and air defense systems. Poland will receive a new $4 billion loan from the United States under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program. This will be the country's fifth such loan in the past two years. In total, Poland has recently secured $15.08 billion in military loans.

dawg I love to be 5 loans deep into my military modernization program, this will surely have no further consequences down the line

also, btw, some of you military procurement heads may have heard of all the South Korean tanks and other gear that the Poles are buying. You know how they're financing that? That's right - a loan... from, uh, South Korea?! Love to loan a guy some cash so he can then pay me my own money to buy my stuff!

According to Defense24, the new funds will be used to upgrade its F-16C/D Block 52+ fighter jets, as well as to purchase AH-64E Apache helicopters and Patriot air defense systems. The U.S. has stated its interest in continuing cooperation in this area. The F-16 upgrades will include new AN/APG-83 SABR AESA radars, mission computers, data fusion systems, electronic warfare systems with updated databases, modern weapon systems, and other improvements.

Previously, after the announcement of the new U.S. defense budget, there were concerns in Poland that it might no longer be able to access FMF loans for new weapons purchases — essentially jeopardizing large defense contracts with American companies. As an alternative, the European Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program was proposed, allowing countries to borrow funds to purchase European-made weapons. Poland even created a list of qualifying domestically produced equipment under the program. For example, the Czech Republic plans to use SAFE funding to acquire Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks. Even Ukraine has expressed interest in such funding to address urgent needs in UAVs, missiles, and ammunition.

Now it's clear that Poland does not have to give up on U.S. weapons while having an alternative path for procuring European equivalents. This allows Warsaw to choose the better option and cover a broader range of defense needs. Of course, the loans will eventually need to be repaid —but given their favorable terms, they allow Poland to strengthen its defense now and spread the financial burden over time. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a practical and available tool.

It seems that this EU-US trade deal and the EU's unconditional surrender has sparked some discontent. Especially France doesn't seem to be happy about it, while Germany is getting a lot of blame. In the past we've talked about how the EU would start falling apart as soon as the national bourgeoisie of major European countries start seeing each other as a threat to their own interests, and I wonder if this is the start of that process.

I linked this in a comment below, but I think it's important and interesting enough to post itself. Here are the results of a survey conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in May 2025.

They had 1270 responses, and participants responded to questions about

  • humanitarian conditions;
  • opinions on October 7th;
  • expectations regarding the genocide and ceasefires;
  • the political outlook after the genocide;
  • anti-Hamas demonstrations;
  • the decision to release israeli hostages, and accept disarmament/expulsion of Hamas;
  • opinions about local, regional, and international actors;
  • fall of Assad and the US war against the Houthis;
  • two-state solution; preferred means of resistance;
  • and more.

I don't have the brain power at this hour to create a more detailed post, so I hope y'all can take it and make some good convo about it. doggy-beg

China Is Choking Supply of Critical Minerals to Western Defense Companies

Beijing’s tightened controls are a sign of the leverage it has over the U.S. military supply chain

WSJ 2025-08-03 https://archive.md/pZ6ay

spoiler

...

As a result, one drone-parts manufacturer that supplies the U.S. military was forced to delay orders by up to two months while it searched for a non-Chinese source of magnets, which are assembled from rare earths.

Certain materials needed by the defense industry now go for five or more times what was typical before China’s recent mineral restrictions, according to industry traders. One company said it was recently offered samarium—an element needed to make magnets that can withstand the extreme temperatures of a jet-fighter engine—for 60 times the standard price. That is already driving the cost of defense systems higher, say suppliers and defense executives.

The squeeze on critical minerals highlights how dependent the U.S. military is on China for much of its supply chain—giving Beijing leverage at a time of rising tensions between the two powers and heated trade negotiations. Defense manufacturers supplying the U.S. military rely on minerals that are mainly produced in China for microelectronics, drone motors, night-vision goggles, missile-targeting systems and defense satellites.

While companies have tried to find alternative sources of these minerals in recent years, some of the elements are so niche that they can’t be economically produced in the West, say industry executives.

...

The Pentagon is requiring defense contractors to stop buying rare-earth magnets that contain China-sourced minerals by 2027. As a result, some companies have sizable stockpiles of magnets. But suppliers and defense companies often hold less than a year’s worth—some just a few months—of many other critical mineral stockpiles.

...

More than 80,000 parts that are used in Defense Department weapons systems are made with critical minerals now subject to Chinese export controls, according to data from defense software firm Govini. Nearly all of the supply chains for key critical minerals used by the Pentagon rely on at least one Chinese supplier, Govini said, meaning restrictions from Beijing can cause widespread disruptions.

Iraqi PM says his security forces stopped attacks against US & israeli bases during the 12 day war in June.

Excerpt:

spoiler

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said in an interview that Baghdad thwarted dozens of attacks targeting Israel and US military bases during the 12-day war between Tehran and Tel Aviv.

Speaking with AP in an interview released on 29 July, the Iraqi premier said armed groups attempted to carry out drone and missile attacks at Israel and US bases in Iraq, but were thwarted 29 times by “security operations.”

...

Sudani told AP in the interview that his government is planning to “keep these groups in check going forward” and that he “wants to get closer to the Trump administration,” even while maintaining strong ties with Iran-linked groups.

...

According to the Iraqi prime minister, Washington and Baghdad will meet by the end of 2025 to “arrange the bilateral security relationship” between both countries. He also said he hopes to secure US investments in oil, gas, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) – which would “contribute to regional security” and make “the two countries great together.”

It looks like the water has made it over 300m/1000ft inland.

The water level is now receding in the bay of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka Krai, Russia. Sand is viable, not a super rapid recession, but not ideal either. First wave should have passed already, but there's always the possibility of a follow-up.

How to help those facing mass starvation in Gaza Emily Chan 28 July 2025

Gaza is suffering from man-made mass starvation due to the Israeli military blockade preventing aid entering the region, the World Health Organisation has warned. Around a quarter of the population is facing famine-like conditions, the UN says, while 100,000 women and children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition and need treatment as soon as possible.

"When faced with credible allegations of genocide, invoking international law is not enough—we must enforce it with determination," said Brazil's foreign chancellor, Mauro Vieira yesterday, announcing diplomatic, commercial & military retaliation measures against Israel.

These measures include: Brazil's intervention in the case brought before the International Court of Justice by South Africa under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Continuation of the suspension of defense material exports to Israel, in accordance with the Arms Trade Treaty, which started last August.

Support for the establishment of a United Nations-led international verification mission to monitor compliance with international law and the creation of a mechanism inspired by the Special Committee against Apartheid. Technical support to the Palestinian Authority in key state-building areas, according to its needs; Investigation and stricter oversight of imports originating from illegal settlements and other unlawfully occupied territories.

Continued support for UNRWA's (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) activities, including assuming the chairmanship of its Advisory Commission and "ensuring a principled distinction between legitimate criticism of state policies and practices affecting Palestinians and antisemitism, in line with recommendations by United Nations Special Rapporteurs.

Vieira also reaffirmed Brazil's condemnation of serious breaches of international and humanitarian law in Gaza and called on nations that don't yet recognize Palestine as a state to follow the example of Brazil and the other 147 other UN members that formally do so.
