“It’s broken and deviated from its original purpose, which is to temporarily help Americans in need,” Turner said. “HUD assistance is not supposed to be permanent.”

If you fuckers had kept the minimum wage in line with inflation, we wouldn't have so many people on long-term assistance. Instead, you keep the minimum wage the same as it was 40(?) years ago, allow massive corporations to onboard people with the explicit instruction, "We're not going to pay you enough, here's how to apply for food stamps and other benefits", then act surprised when people have to use public benefits to survive.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_wage_in_the_United_States

In 2009, Congress increased it to $7.25 per hour with the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007.

While the amount did increase, you missed the line right above it -- minimum wage in the USA has effectively been decreasing since 1968.

Its purchasing power peaked in 1968, at $1.60 ($14.00 in 2024)

This is so stupid. These are bottom level safety nets. there is nothing more. unemployment having a time limit makes sense but not disability or housing assitance or such. The only thing that is going to be worse than watching the homeless camps is to eventually be in one. man the cyberpunk game feels like where we will be in 3 years at least the way th e cities look.

The unemployment timeline needs to be extended to meet job availability. I get that a small number of people abuse the system, but most don’t and it can take well over 6 months for find a job.

I got laid off last year. Submitted over 200 applications, got 4 interviews, and took the first one that said yes—for $30k less than my previous job, and still that took 7 months.

Unemployment is shit in Oklahoma. Worked 6 years for one company, got 5 months of unemployment. Took much longer then that to find work.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Oklahoma its based on last 18 months. But in Texas when I had to collect it. It was based on the life time of employment. I had like 20k in unemployment availabile to me. Since I had gone 10 years of employment before collecting. I didn't get much think it was 200 a week. But according to the paper I could have collected that until the 20k was spent.

Oklahoma no matter how long you work its 18 months. Which for me lasted 5 months.

6 months is the most I’ve ever heard it paying out, regardless of the employment length. Since it’s the state paying it, there is just a “time period,” which for my state is 6 months for every qualified period…. Which appears to be 90 days of employment gets up to 6 months of unemployment (with the payment being based on salary). Hopefully I don’t find out.

Oh I know but thats unlikely given they are pulling the rug from the bottom rung. Im a few weeks from the one year anniversary of being let go and I have massive education and experience and have been regularly looking and still do the paperwork for it even though im not getting anything in the hopes it gets it onto official statistics. Have yet to have one to say yes to although I did have one that I know was down to two where I was not selected and got past one interview on a few more. Heck it was only spring of this year that the replies were im not selected rather than something to indicate the position was pulled.

I.T. - just told would not go forward with one but Im appreciative as it was actually open minded about experience that was quite some time back. They could have kicked me out as a prospect right from the get go but were willing to look at folks with a lot of experience who could take on the role (I was excited as it felt more like the aughts in attitude). I could not sleep as I realized I had answered a question wrong and could visualize when I had worked with the system. The other one I had this week was an initial but it sounds like I should get to the second stage in a week or two when they go into regular interviews. I.E. - it sounds like I passed the resume stage.

I cannot help but wonder how many of these people sat out the election or voted for Taco outright...

but this is exactly what Taco voters wanted. Run the country like a business, and make it more "efficient". If it seems it has cruel outcomes, well, duh. How much care does a business have for poor people?

Aid: we have a “housing crisis” Mr. President. What if we limit how many homes an individual can own, vacation homes tend to be vacant 90% of the year and don’t contribute much to local communities.

Drumpf: Well I’m not selling any of my vacation homes. Hear me out, what if we squeeze out the poorest people from their homes and put them on the streets.

Aid: hahaha, oh wait… you’re serious

The US is self-destructing.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's being murdered, not self destructing.

Fair enough!

[–] amorpheus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Murdered would imply external forces. While I'm sure there are some influences, those are not what's putting a knife on the country's wrist.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Trump is a Russian asset, so external forces absolutely apply here. And I wouldn't consider tech bros rigging the election an internal force.

[–] storm@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago

While this is true, it should also be recognized that the system as a whole has been festering for a long time. Everytime Democrats have tried to court the so-called moderate conservative instead of actually standing for something over the last decades, they put another nail in the coffin of our democracy.

America is dying from a thousand cuts of self-harm

Is this Christianity?
