I don't like Tesla, but its hard to argue with the execution on this one. I might think its ugly, but at least it looks well put together, which is more than I can say for some kit cars I have seen.
It isn't that great looking. Most of that comes down to them starting with a Model 3 and having to conform the design to the base chassis. It has a lot going for it in the execution, but it looks like a body swap in a bad way.
I think the thickness of the floor due to the batteries is what the problem is. Cutting 3-4" from the floor thickness would make the look work way better.
The grill isn't appealing, but all electric cars are like that. The hood vent is a nice choice. The rear quarters look nice, but I kind of want it to have vents, which would be a prime spot for the radiators, which would allow for a better front.
I give it a 10/10 for the effort and craftsmanship that is visible from the view, but from an objective criticism of the car it is like a 6/10.
I would love to see it in person and talk with the creator about the project, but I wouldn't want one.
It definitely hits that spot for me. I’m more of a pickup guy myself, but this is legitimately one of the better-looking “sports cars” I’ve ever seen. Looks are subjective, of course.
What do you think about the Slate?
I'm interested because it has a Rivian size bed(good enough for the majority of my needs) and is a mini-truck. The customization planned is interesting. The range isn't fantastic, but I would wait for the extended range upgrade anyways.
There’s a lot I like about it. It skips most of the pointless features nearly all modern trucks come with, which is a good thing, and I really like the plain, utilitarian approach they’ve taken. I hope they succeed and keep making more of them – including new models.
That said, this first version doesn’t quite tick all the boxes for me personally. It’s not as ugly as the Rivian, but I’m still not a huge fan of the design. I do like that it doesn’t have rear seats, but I’d want a slightly longer cab with room for toolbags behind the seats.
The lack of 4WD is a complete dealbreaker for me however. I’m also seeing conflicting info about the bed length, but it seems to be around 150 cm – not quite enough. I could maybe make that work, but it’s not ideal. I’m currently driving an ‘07 Nissan Navara King Cab (Frontier in the US), and it’s pretty much the perfect work truck for me. Having something like that converted to EV would be fantastic.
It would be nice if it were an extended cab for storage, and the extra battery capacity that can be added with that.
Having 4WD would be really nice, but you lose range with that. It isn't meant to tow or really be off-road capable, so being RWD isn't a big deal for the target market. I would be fine being an early adopter with the hope that I could trade up to a 4WD version later. I get snow by me and have the skills to handle RWD with glee, but 4WD would be glorious when the roads get silly.
The bed is like 109cm between the arches and 207cm with the gate down, which meets the size needs of all but the most serious tradie. I have a work truck, so the Slate meets my personal needs.
