What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

I was banned from an .ml instance for criticizing both Hamas and Israel. You're not allowed to say anything that goes against the narrative in .ml. They act just like the authoritarian states they jerk off to.

I consider myself a socialist but shit like this is an absolute deal breaker. Both Hamas and Israel have fucked over the Palestinian people, as far as I can tell. I'm completely open to the possibility that Hamas is a good organization but I have yet to see any evidence of that.

The thing about the common move of "israel and hamas are both bad" is that imo you should always add the qualifier of "But also Hamas is used as a cover and justification for Israeli atrocities, and also likely would be either significantly weakened or not exist at all if it were not for the ongoing genocide of palestinians."

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Makes sense. Israel is certainly significantly worse than Hamas, and Hamas only exists as a reaction to the crimes of Israel. Saying "both sides" sounds like one is arguing that their crimes are equal. They're not even close.

But I look at the actions of Hamas on October 7 and I struggle to see how they're doing anything other than making everything worse. I don't know what they should be doing, but what they have done just isn't it.

You don't have to say they're equal by saying both are bad

Davel isn’t even a mod of !worldnews@lemmy.ml and they’re micromanaging the community.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Lol that's not even scratching the surface. Davel, dessalines and to a lesser extent, another admin, cypherpunks; comprise almost the entire modlog for .ml, with very little activity from actual comm mods

[–] tanran@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago

Davel is also a genocide denialist and tries to downplay CCP role in genocides https://lemmy.ca/post/45030516/16845589 Under his reply you can see Dessalines too doing it

I mean second there absolutely is not news... donno what rule 1 is, but this doesn't seem that crazy

[–] Glide@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Depends on the article. That could absolutely be a headline for an opinion piece, or a professional interview, etc. Because of the context here, I'm suspicious that the "not news" argument is a dishonest one.

[–] Child_of_the_bukkake@lemmy.cafe 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

opinion pieces are not news

[–] Glide@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I fundamentally disagree. See the piece published by The (British) Times written by Eva Kors after she publicly forgave Oskar Gröning at his trial for his actions in Auschwitz, titled "Why forgiveness is the best revenge of all." A first hand account of such events is infinitely more newsworthy than the majority of slop published. But it isn't news because it is, ultimately, an opinion piece on why she believes she is right to forgive him?

Context and nuance matters.

[–] Child_of_the_bukkake@lemmy.cafe 0 points 22 hours ago

She shouldn't have forgave oskar whatever. They removed the stasi from germany not even 20 years ago and they're already back to being nazis.

Saw a great article that was critical of the Uyghur labour camps and their relevance to China's dominance in cheap tech just silently disappear from Worldnews@lemmy.world the other day. I don't know how to find the modlogs, and I've been wondering about that ever since. I expect that kind of shit from the fascist triumvirate instances but I found myself wondering who has their thumb in the .world pie.

I can still see it https://lemmy.ca/post/45020563 A guy kept arguing with one of the trolls from .ml in there and other communities and got the genocide denialist banned from 2 communities ( https://lemmy.ca/post/45011951/16838126 )

[–] Eldritch@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

That was a completely different post. And the post this person is thinking of is a newer one. I commented to it as well. I still have the comment. But the post is now gone. Assuming non nefarious things. it was likely taken down for violating a community rule on posts. Or being a duplicate. I don't think that Community is known for or would have reason to take it down otherwise
