Cross-posted from "Xi Jinping supports Putin’s position on war against Ukraine" by @MicroWave@lemmy.world in !world@lemmy.world

In a joint statement following talks, Xi Jinping and Putin stated that the war in Ukraine could only be resolved by removing its "root causes".

Such formulation clearly echoes key Russian propaganda messages used by the Kremlin to justify the launch of the full-scale war, including the threat of NATO expansion, discrimination against Russian-speaking people and the suppression of the Russian language, culture and media in Ukraine.

Of course, China is on Russia's side, this has long been clear, they are waiting for their chance with Taiwan, 100%.

Ukrainians were very tolerant of the Russian language and culture even after 2014, even Poroshenko and Zelensky were both Russian-speaking (their main language was Russian), but after 2022, Ukrainian tolerance for the Russian language, Russians and Russian “culture” dropped drastically, which is not surprising.

Russia has been trying to turn us into Russians for centuries, they exterminated our ancestors, they forced their language through violence, occupation, and genocide, banned Ukrainian more than once or even twice, killed our writers and public figures, and so on. What's more, they are even now burning Ukrainian books in the occupied territories.

Of course they do. Seriously, who does this surprise? From China's perspective, Ukraine is a global test bed for Taiwan.

This is deeply disturbing. The linked article itself links to a reuters one, https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-greets-chinas-xi-kremlin-2025-05-08/

In a lengthy joint statement, they said they would deepen relations in all areas, including military ties,

Military ties?? Combine that with the "root causes" statement and the logical conclusion is ...

China as a country was officially neutral, even as individuals sometimes made choices that we'd disagree with, https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2025/04/10/china-rejects-claims-it-is-aware-its-citizens-are-fighting-in-ukraine-as-irresponsible

But now the leaders of China are the ones being irresponsible. How could anyone support Russia's position against Ukraine and be against a peaceful resolution?

They will happily tell you that they are all about peaceful resolution. Meaning unconditional surrender of Ukraine, which is the ridiculous point.

I wouldn't have guessed that Xi is taller than Putler.

Consensus says that Xi is 5'11"/1.8m while Putler varies wildly from 5'2"/1.57m to 5'7"/1.7m
