Would a failed state spend all their money on an octagon and the world's largest flagpole?

You just keep on pushing the Palestines over the borderline.

Sisi is pretty chummy with Washington, isn't he?

[-] DickFuckarelli@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

Oddly, he's not as well liked as most dictators.

The Egyptian military dictatorship is a tentative US and Israeli ally, the Egyptian bourgeois aren't interested in advancing the cause of the Palestinians and their western backers enjoy significant influence over them

But that tidy little arrangement has reached its limit and the Egyptian working class is about to explode

P sure isntreal hit it with an airstrike yesterday

I’ve also wondered this. Egypt isn’t dropping bombs but they’re just as complicit in the blockade as Israel. It feels like it’s never even mentioned that Gaza and Egypt share a border.

Because it's not true. Israel decides what comes in and out, otherwise they threaten either airstrikes or to reinvade the border region. The one thing Israel doesn't object to is to allow all Gazans to leave, but that's because they want Gaza to repopulate so they can seize it.

The condition for Israel pulling out of the border was that they would decide what gets in or out. When Egypt yesterday wanted to provide fuel and supplies, Israel threatened an airstrike.

Hamas has historical ties to the Muslim Brotherhood which Sisi and the Egyptian military consider terrorists, as well as a peace treaty and diplomatic relations with Israel. As others have said, Egypt is a military dictatorship with ties to the US and support from it, these make it complicated for them to just open the border (although I do think that Israel saying they wanted Gazans to flee to Egypt means they would not airstrike it should they open it in that direction but also logic isn't reliable in war all the time).

Egypt closed it when Hamas seized control of Gaza because they didn't want Iranian influence coming into the country.
