We just took our first step and cancelled Netflix! It's a small thing compared to some of you, but we're here to stay! Becoming more and more aware and striving to buy European!

Every single step towards IT independance is good to take, while some can afford to ditch Windows for Linux, erase all their subscriptions, it's not as easy for others. Every cent that they don't make from us is the better.

Still have the moral dilemma of cancelling my WoW subscription 😭😭

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

cancelling wow left me a much, much happier person, if that helps

… of course i do get dreams sometimes of my character weeping in a black void and saying “i’m so lonely please come and play with me”… yknow, just normal non-psychologically abusive things that they definitely didn’t mean to do to keep you addicted and coming back again and again

[–] Aidenwill@jlai.lu 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I should consider it, even if I'm still leveling on Classic so the daily boredom isn't there yet. I already have this boredom with my gacha games haha.

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

it’s incredibly addictive, and acknowledging that is okay… it’s also fun for a bit! just know when you’re doing it less because you’re having fun and more because you’re in a routine (and sometimes those things are very hard to distinguish)

and if you decide to quit, treat it like smoking or alcohol abuse: you never stop quitting… i “stopped playing” 5 times before it stuck. that’s not a failure - it’s a step on the journey to being completely over it, and 1 day you’ll stop and never go back

granted, i’m pretty sure i was way more addicted than a lot of people and perhaps you don’t need this advice… but fuuuuuuuck video game addiction is absolutely a thing, and it can cause life-long mental health issues. it gets soft-balled so often, but there’s not much difference between it and slot machines at the end of the day except that wow isn’t regulated

What does Real Debrid add that Kodi + Elementum or normal stremio doesn't do?

[–] Renohren@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Great : it is one small step for man, one giant leap for your humanity. We will force capitalism to come back to it's senses, play politics all you want but remember: we are customers, not products. In the end we determine how much your shareholders make.

Canadian here. We cancelled Netflix and all of our Apple services.

It’s the churn that will really hurt the U.S. companies when they realize the only ones buying their products are Americans, and in order to appease their share holders they’ll need to have price increases more often and much higher.

Keep it up. Vote with your wallet.

American here and I've cancelled a lot of subscriptions over the past month. I'm basically only paying for essentials like groceries, utilities, various insurance plans and gas. A lot of us here are doing what we can to reduce our spending.

Unfortunately I lost access to Viaplay (Swedish streaming service) after my girlfriend cancelled her Amazon Prime membership. Prime had to go, but I miss my Nordic noir.

Netflix has become trash over the years anyway, you're all better off with other services.

Even the smallest things can make a difference.

[–] gruvn@lemm.ee 11 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Canadian here - canceled Amazon Prime, and deleted Meta's Facebook and Messenger. I also canceled my Norton subscription and will be replacing it with Avast. I'm canceling Google One cloud storage and have changed my default search engine to Quant.
I know I'm just one family, but if we all do this kind of stuff, what a world it would be!

[–] otaj@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Avast and Norton are one company for couple years now https://www.gendigital.com/

Source: worked for Avast right before the merger, left because didn't like the merger

[–] gruvn@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Thanks for the tip - hadn't heard about the Avast news, and wasn't aware Windows Defender might be sufficient. I'll look into it.

I'll confess to still using WhatsApp, cause I don't have it in my heart to force my 80 year old mother to learn signal.

Oh - and I'm replacing gmail (email and calendar) with Proton. I think the CEO isn't great, but it's a very similar service, and it's not US based. Any recommendations for alternatives to Android and Apple? I'm getting less comfortable with how much data Google has (and I don't like iOS).

[–] stardust@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Another thing is virustotal is a good site for scanning programs before running it, since it'll scan it with every possible virus scanner available.

Windows defender and browsing the web with something ublock origin to block ads is sufficient. And just having virustotal scan a program before running it will protect you from most stuff.

If you do insist on a third party virus scanner then eset is one I used to use for years before sticking with defender. It is from Slovakia.

[–] Renohren@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Virus total has been bought by Google. It's what is behind plastore protection.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Unfortunately, phone OSes alternatives are still far behind Android and iOS for most people.

But you can use a de-Googled Android distribution: Graphene (probably the best choice but Google Pixel only and may have a learning curve), Calyx, Lineage, eOS.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Proton the company recently deleted their Mastodon to exclusively use Twitter. They are very sketchy.

[–] sniggleboots@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

"very sketchy" compared to what standard though

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

I already didn't use Facebook or Messenger, so that was easy for us. Good one on Norton, I'll be cancelling that one next!

[–] AarynBlack@lemm.ee 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Friendly reminder about Amazon Prime: you don't need Prime at all for free shipping and Amazon video definitely isn't worth that price every year.

Save yourself $150+ per year that you're literally spending on nothing.

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 4 points 2 days ago

Thanks! Never was a big fan of Amazon and we have great alternatives where I live, so luckily I never had to give Bezos any money hehe

[–] ToiletFlushShowerScream@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You've given me the courage to do the right thing and cancel my 20 year subscription. Here goes...

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 3 points 2 days ago

That's great! Keep it up!

[–] Billybob22@feddit.uk 11 points 2 days ago

Fully support your actions and reasoning.

It's a process.

We have cancelled and deleted Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook.

Just started move to alternatives and now have Ubuntu as well as Home Assistant.

[–] shawn1122@lemm.ee 9 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Does anyone know of a recommendation engine as robust as Netflix? Trying to talk my wife into canceling, but it's very good at suggesting new content, which is hard to let go of.

[–] Apocalypteroid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Kodi with Real Debrid. I have used it for a couple of years now. Can get everything as soon as it comes to streaming. I run it through an nvidia shield but you can use fire sticks or chromecast, you also need a VPN and ~$10 every 6 months subscription fee. It's a bit of an upfront cost and will take maybe half an hour to set up but it's totally worth it. I haven't paid for a single streaming channel in about 5 years so it's paid for itself several times now.

[–] shawn1122@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

What extension do you use on Kodi?

[–] oldfart@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

trakt.tv used to have good recommendations when i tried it, but i don't use Netflix so I don't know how they compare. There's also https://couchmoney.tv/ that works with a Trakt account.

[–] knobbysideup@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Nzb360. Bonus, direct add to the arr's

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

This app seems amazing. Tomorrow I'll look into installing radarr on my Raspberry pi 5, then connect it to the app. Kodi is already on there with Elementym so it's a great addition.

[–] turtl@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

I've been liking www.justwatch.com a lot

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

I cancelled Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ a couple months ago. No more streaming subscription services for me! I'm very anti-subscription.

Except for Curiosity Stream, which is like Netflix but for educational documentaries. Even with the cost of my subscription doubling in the last 4 years, I'm still only paying about $30/year for it. Way cheaper than Netflix, and highly educational too!

I also set up my own Plex media server, then ripped all my DVDs and Blu-rays to my computer so I can watch them anytime, streaming from anywhere. I don't have to worry about content disappearing because the only time something vanishes from my Plex server is when I manually remove it myself.

Plex itself also has tons of free movies and TV shows streaming through it too. Mostly stuff that's open license. So even if you don't have your own media server set up, there's still tons of stuff to watch without paying for a subscription.

[–] MoonlightFox@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

There are a couple of streaming services in Europe. It seems that most of them are targeted at specific countries, but still.

I have enjoyed a Norwegian one with mainly Norwegian content and BritBox, with a little bit of Hollywood stuff sprinkled on top.

[–] 79luca79@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago (4 children)

i only have gmail, netflix and windows 10 to replace. gmail is easy but time consuming. on netflix is dragon ball daima 😭

microshaft windowns 10 is the hardest for me. most of my games arent from steam.

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

I already made a Tuta account and am shifting the subscriptions to that one, but I will wait until email import is introduced to shift completely.

[–] IDew@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago

I can suggest Ameliorated together with MASSgrave to set a step in a somewhat right direction. You have choice from optimized windows to a private version of windows that have all connected parts to Microsoft stripped out.

[–] b1t@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've been using Proton Mail for a few months now and I love it. Setting up auto-forwarding + delete is pretty simple in Gmail too. Then I set my phone to sync my "empty" accounts so that Google doesn't delete them.

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What do you mean with "empty accounts"? I'm interested in this setup

[–] b1t@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

All mail is automatically forwarded then deleted. So the inbox is left empty (except the backups I'm keeping for possible legal coverage.)

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

That's a great solution for the transition period!

[–] Someplaceunknown@fedia.io 2 points 2 days ago
