No way that game has enough content or is complex enough to justify 135GB. What it is is unoptimized crap. And since storage keeps getting cheaper studios have no incentive to fix it.

There's 1TB SATA SSDs for $35 at my local best buy.

I heard that they sometimes duplicate assets grouped by area, so the assets for an entire level can be loaded at once making it load faster, but I don’t know if this is still done and if it even makes sense with SSD’s.

I think the reason is just absolute fuckloads of highres assets like textures, audio, lightmaps, shit like that. Blame the neverending race for better looking games.

[-] irmoz@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago

You think it's just full of empty bits thay added in for fun to inflate it? Yeah sure, optimisation could be better and there's no excuse foe not trying, but at the end of the day, if you have 130GB worth of assets, then there's little you can do to shrink it. Those textures, audio files etc can only be compressed so far.

I had horrible framerate/stuttering with raytracing enabled so i refunded it... waste of 135gb download

[-] yesmeisyes@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 year ago

For me it has been running just fine with 7900XTX on a 4k TV all settings on Epic. Stutters only occur occasionally in a few places. I only started playing it a week ago though so there might have been some patches.

I guess as long as the game runs on your NASA super computer it's everbody else's fault, right?
Personally I believe in the Dachsjäger gospel. If that dude says it does have issues, then it has issues.

"ARE YOU DOWNLOADING AGAIN??" yells my mom from the living room

[-] renrenPDX@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Laughs in Late 90s Dial Up

Fucking lmao - now the kids get to once again deal with 'get off the fucking internet!' from their parents.

[-] SpezCanLigmaBalls@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

And yet data caps still exist. It’s so dumb

BuT hArDdRiVeS aRe ChEaP... and compressing textures just wastes CPU power when you need 18k textures that're gonna be smeared to shit by TAA anyway.

So, fuck compressing assets or worrying at all about optimization.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Why is Liverpool and England star Trent Alexander-Arnold smearing my textures? You'd think he was too busy playing football..

[-] bighatchester@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

I'm glad I can get gigabit internet here . Would still probably take like 10-15 minutes though

[-] Wilzax@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

(135gigabyes) * (8 bits/byte) * (1 gigabit/sec) * (1 min/60 sec)

= 18 minutes at gigabit avg. down

[-] doubletandard@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

he did the muf

[-] PeashooterXV-21@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

You can fit like idk 2 call of duty games on a Xbox now

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

See also: playing Ultima Online back when the only connection available was pay by the minute dial up. If I had a dollar for every time my dad threatened to cut the cord when seeing the bill, I'd probably buy Boston..

[-] emanresu@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Just go play some SNES roms

[-] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 year ago

It's really pretty though. The first boss fight is great

Oh the times when getting GTA from a friend required 30+ 3½" floppy disks IIRC. That plus making 5 or 6 round trips to friend's house, because one of them almost always got corrupted during the zip process.

And since no one had the disk space or knowhow to store the zip packets on HDD for the inevitable re-copying, had to redo the whole pack from scratch each time.

Edit: disk->HDD

[-] fox2263@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Is there any more patches for Survivor that fix things?

[-] Mubelotix@jlai.lu 1 points 1 year ago

I downloaded the blockchain twice
