This year has been a milestone for us, with significant strides in decentralizing app distribution, expanding the F-Droid ecosystem, and solidifying our infrastructure. All of these advancements were made possible thanks to donations, grants, our volunteers and regular contributors. So thank you again to everyone who helped make 2024 another great year for F-Droid. Now let’s take a closer look at what we accomplished.

Fdroid nowadays is where I looks for apps first, only if I can't find something suitable I go to the google play store.

I’m new to it. Any tips?

You might want to add the Izzy On Droid repository if you find yourself frustrated by the repo size. There are caveats compared to F-Droid so please read their docs.

Thank you, I will check it out. Any specific apps you’d recommend?

Edit: They have over 1200 apps. Nice. I suppose just whatever I’m looking for? Are there apps to avoid or any that compromise the OS in these repos?

If you open the search and don't type anything the apps are sorted by last updated, just start scrolling 😁

Did you install F-Droid yet?

[–] KnightontheSun@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yes. Loaded one or two apps.

In F-Droid it's possible to add aditional repositories. So a developer can have their own repository and F-Droid will show it in the shop, but the developer can handle everything about the backend themselves. To add repositories you need to do this yourself manually: https://f-droid.org/tutorials/add-repo/

Thank you. Any shady repos to avoid?

Until now I only added new ones if I needed a specific app.

You might like the Izzy On Droid repository, or the Obtainium app. There are caveats to both compared to F-Droid so please read their respective docs.
