This goes without saying, every country will levy retaliatory tariffs. It's one of the reasons random tariffs are such a stupid idea to begin with.

He's not even in office and the trade wars are already starting. As if I wasn't already living paycheck to paycheck

Trump would probably be just as happy to stop exporting goods to Mexico altogether. Even if Mexico finishes his wall for him.

[-] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 5 points 3 days ago

I forgot what it is that we actually export. Tires? Oranges/Almonds? Military hardware?

A shit ton of electronics, oil, industrial equipment, plastics, and a surprising large amount of agriculture like pork, corn, dairy.

We actually trade a crap ton with Mexico.

[-] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 4 points 3 days ago

I would not have guessed electronics. Usually I think of China, Japan, and South Korea as major suppliers.

If I remember right, it's a supply chain thing where a ton of stuff gets made in China but is still a US product and sometimes finished here. Think iPhones, for example. Apple is still a US company, it's not like China can just sell Mexico iPhones direct.

Ps this is also why tariffs are extremely stupid.

This site has probably the best visualizer (scroll past the first section to get the free historical data): https://oec.world/en/profile/country/mex?yearlyTradeFlowSelector=flow1

TL;DR: Lots of things. $300 billion worth of things.
