back in my map era, we're ukrainemaxxing right now

Declarations of the imminent doom of Ukraine are a news megathread specialty, and this is not what I am doing here - mostly because I'm convinced that whenever we do so, the war extends another three months to spite us. Ukraine has been in an essentially apocalyptic crisis for over a year now after the failure of the 2023 counteroffensive, unable to make any substantial progress and resigned to merely being a persistent nuisance (and arms market!) as NATO fights to the last Ukrainian. In this context, predicting a terminal point is difficult, as things seem to always be going so badly that it's hard to understand how and why they fight on. In every way, Ukraine is a truly shattered country, barely held together by the sheer combined force of Western hegemony. And that hegemony is weakening.

I therefore won't be giving any predictions of a timeframe for a Ukrainian defeat, but the coming presidency of Trump is a big question mark for the conflict. Trump has talked about how he wishes for the war to end and for a deal to be made with Putin, but Trump also tends to change his mind on an issue at least three or four times before actually making a decision, simply adopting the position of who talked to him last. And, of course, his ability to end the war might be curtailed by a military-industrial complex (and various intelligence agencies) that want to keep the money flowing.

The alignment of the US election with the accelerating rate of Russian gains is pretty interesting, with talk of both escalation and de-escalation coinciding - the former from Biden, and the latter from Trump. Russia very recently performed perhaps the single largest aerial attack of Ukraine of the entire war, striking targets across the whole country with missiles and drones from various platforms. In response, the US is talking about allowing Ukraine to hit long-range targets in Russia (but the strategic value of this, at this point, seems pretty minimal).

Additionally, Russia has made genuine progress in terms of land acquisition. We aren't talking about endless and meaningless battles over empty fields anymore. Some of the big Ukrainian strongholds that we've been spending the last couple years speculating over - Chasiv Yar, Kupiansk, Orikhiv - are now being approached and entered by Russian forces. The map is actually changing now, though it's hard to tell as Ukraine is so goddamn big.

Attrition has finally paid off for Russia. An entire generation of Ukrainians has been fed into the meat grinder. Recovery will take, at minimum, decades - more realistically, the country might be permanently ruined, until that global communist revolution comes around at least. And they could have just made a fucking deal a month into the war.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Denmark's Red-Greens, considered by public opinion to be the far-most looney left there is, has weighed in on the arrest warrants for zionist war criminals. They are doing so by asking the regime to explain "future relations" with the illegal zionist entity.

Red-Green foreign policy spokesperson Trine Petrou Mach says:

The way Danish foreign policy has been conducted for the last 13 to 14 months has been based on the fact that there was no evidence of war crimes. This is not proof, but it is a sign that there is indeed a justified suspicion.

"No evidence" until now. "Not proof". A "justified suspicion". You've got to admire the courage, principles and clear moral compass of the western left.

The exact scope of the American Biden regime's decision to attack Russia with ATACMS missiles is not known in detail. In an interview with state media DR foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has expressed disappointment in what he believes to be a limited scope of the planned attacks:

If it were true that the U.S. had lifted geographic restrictions, that would be good. But I have a sense that this is relatively limited and likely focused on Kursk. And that’s, of course, better than nothing,

(DR found it fitting to embellish Rasmussen's statement by inserting a note about "Pentagon" claiming that there are 10,000 democratic Korean troops in the Kursk oblast. I have omitted it from the quote)

Even the Danish regime, who has been among the most bellicose, is now beginning to slowly realise that the west will not be able to impose it's maximalist demands on Russia. Rasmussen is now talking about how the purpose of the American ATACMS attacks is not to achieve victory but to make sure that Ukraine has the "strongest possible position for when and if the dynamics of this war change." He goes on to say that "It’s a sober prediction that this could happen sometime in the new year,"

Rasmussen continues:

President Zelensky has also stated that the war will likely shift to a diplomatic phase at some point. And it’s crucial that Ukraine has the strongest possible advantage in that scenario

...

One way to make a difference is to lift geographic restrictions (on the use of Western weapons). Unfortunately, I don’t currently see this happening one-to-one. But something is better than nothing,"

However, the Danish regime has yet to move to a more realistic position on the war. Rasmussen is mostly dismissive of German leader Olaf Scholz' attempts to resume dialogue with Russia by making a phone call to Putin. Rasmussen says:

If the purpose was to persuade Putin to end the war, it clearly didn’t succeed. Because immediately afterward, we saw one of the most massive Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in a very long time

This, of course, is a deeply unserious statement that should be seen as a symptom of the butthurt many western maximalists must be experiencing these days.

Despite his bruised ego, Rasmussen is enough of an opportunist to realise that the reality of the war is shifting both on the ground and in the imperial court of Washington where the incoming Trump regime might be less keen to continue the war. He says that European countries needs to understand "what's what" and says that "We must avoid a situation where we simply have no role to play. If the call aimed to ensure that, I’m more understanding".

He adds:

There’s nothing from that conversation suggesting President Putin is remotely ready to negotiate."

Bangladesh ex-ministers face ‘massacre’ charges, Hasina probe deadline set

This is a fucking kangaroo court, I do not think Hasina and her Government was great, but they are not in any way guilty of genocide.

“They are complicit in enabling massacres by participating in planning, inciting violence, ordering law enforcement officers to shoot on sight, and obstructing efforts to prevent a genocide.”

Yea i wonder what Yunus' military and police would do if a similar revolt takes place now. They continue with devaluing the term genocide.

Trump's treasury secretary (i know its copy pasting wiki but it's good info on his background)

Bessent founded Key Square Group in 2015 with Michael Germino, who had been the global head of capital markets at SFM.[20] Key Square uses geopolitics and economics to make macro investments.[15] Key Square received a $2 billion anchor investment from George Soros.[21] At the end of 2017, Key Square's assets were $5.1 billion.[21][22] Bloomberg in May 2018 reported that Key Square had mostly outperformed rival macro managers and continued to generate significant investor interest.[21] As part of a pre-arranged deal, the firm returned the Soros capital as it took in other assets.[21] Its investors include Australia's sovereign wealth fund, Future Fund.[22]

In 2000, Bessent hosted a fundraiser for Al Gore at his East Hampton, New York, home.[23] He has also donated to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.[24] In 2016, Bessent donated $1 million to Donald Trump's 2017 presidential inaugural committee.[25]

In February 2024, Bessent hosted a fundraiser in Greenville, South Carolina, that raised nearly $7 million for Donald Trump's 2024 campaign.[26] In April 2024, Bessent was a host for a Palm Beach, Florida, fundraiser that raised $50 million for the Trump campaign.[27] In July 2024, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that Bessent was a key economic advisor to Trump.[28] He proposed a three-point economic plan for Trump modeled on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's "Three Arrows" economic policy.[29] Bessent praised Trump's proposal to implement broad tariffs.[30]

He wants a strong Dollar so he can bet against other currencies? There is really no reason for anyone in the US to be pro broad tariffs other than rhetoric or if it benefits them personally.

If you are a tiny developing country, sure. Wide tariffs and controls on trade would allow for more room for imports that promote development for everyone, but U.S. and the West are not that. Also keep in mind despite Trump's rhetoric about tariffs and controls on trade, he has always been pro-free capital flows.

Some World Cup qualifying news from the best continent, Asia. Japan continue their rampage as they beat China today, while Saudi Arabia continue their woeful form with a loss against Indonesia. Iraq beat Oman away, big result for Iraq. Iraq's chances for a first World Cup since 1986 look very good after Jordan's fumble vs Kuwait. Uzbekistan look set for their first World Cup appearence after beating Based Korea today, while Bad Korea drew against Palestine. My projection of qualified teams after this round is: Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Iraq, Japan, Australia. Saudi Arabia should make it through the playoffs, but they look like shit. UAE have picked some nice form recently, so I think they will be the last team to make it from Asia.

Does anyone have sources on how much US/UK involvement is required to launch these missiles? It is guaranteed that they provide intel and potential targets. From there, does Ukraine program the missiles? According to Wikipedia, it seems the Storm Shadow missiles are guided by GPS, which—despite its ubiquity—is US military tech. It also appears the missiles need to be loaded with satellite images for target matching. Apparently, they can relay images of a site just before impact and presumably that won't be going directly to Ukrainian military staff but more likely somewhere in the US/UK?

I was almost impressed for a second by some of the tech, but then I remembered that Russia has missiles flying at up to 3 km/s, and now I’m not as much.

A bloomer take on the recent news of China issuing USD-dominated sovereign bond to Saudi here.

Am close to illiterate on finance and economy but how solid is his first hypothetical scenario of China issuing ~100 billions of bond? Also, doesn't it changes the whole question of re/de-dollarization ?

North Africa: The movement for the independence of the Rif Republic makes its first summit in Algeria, some excerpts from the speaker "Juba Al-Ghdiwi":

  • We will have a visit to the pure land of the Rif republic when it is liberated from the filth of the Alawites, and this is a dream that will come true just as our ancestors achieved it more than 100 years ago.

  • The Republic of the Rif was an existing political entity that enjoyed independence before it was taken from it, which highlights the historical legitimacy and legal legitimacy of the Rif people’s demand to restore what was stolen from them.

  • The independence of the Republic of the Rif was between 1921 and 1926. It was established as the first independent republic in North Africa under the leadership of President Muhammad bin Abdul Karim al-Khattabi.

  • The Republic of the Rif was subjected to international conspiracies and the collusion of internal and external colonial powers, which led to its suppression and the return of the Rif to colonial control, and then by the Moroccan functional regime that imposed its hegemony, after the so called the independence of Morocco in 1956.

  • The independence of the Rif Republic is the restoration of a legitimate right, not a new demand, and the people of the countryside do not want secession, but rather the restoration of their right that was taken by force.

  • The Rif does not seek to separate from Morocco. Separation means that we were once part of this functional entity called Morocco, an entity created and implanted within the African body to serve the interests of the colonial powers.

  • We in the Republic of the Rif have never recognized the sovereignty of the Moroccan regime over our land, and how can we recognize a regime created by French colonialism and guaranteed its continuation through slavery agreements, most notably the protection treaty signed in 1912, according to which the Alawites handed over the Sultanate of Marrakesh to French colonialism in exchange for their remaining at the helm of power as obedient hands. In the hands of colonialism.

  • Since its inception, this entity has served, and continues to serve, external agendas at the expense of the peoples it claims to represent, which is clearly evident in its continued oppression of the people of the Rif and the people of Western Sahara.

  • Morocco and its Alawite Sultan were never on the side of the free peoples or on the side of the Rifites defending their homeland. Quite the opposite. Sultan Youssef the Alawite was an ally of the French and Spanish colonial powers against the Rifites and contributed directly to the fight against the Rif Republic, which was a symbol of dignity and freedom.

Britain calling for ~~sanctions~~(misread) on Sudan at the UN Security Council

https://www.africanews.com/2024/11/18/britain-calls-for-un-action-on-sudan-boosts-humanitarian-aid/

The UK will seek UN Security Council support on Monday, November 18 to demand an end to Sudan’s conflict and ensure humanitarian aid delivery, the foreign ministry has announced.

As council president, Foreign Secretary David Lammy will lead a vote on a UK-Sierra Leone resolution urging civilian protection in Sudan. “The UK will never let Sudan be forgotten,” Lammy is set to say, while pledging to double UK aid for Sudan to £226 million ($285 million).

The power struggle between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023, has caused thousands of deaths and the world’s largest displacement crisis.

Lammy will also condemn Israel’s restrictions on Gaza aid, call for a ceasefire, and demand the release of hostages. On Ukraine, he will reaffirm Britain’s unwavering support against Russia’s invasion.

Argentina snubs G20 summit launch of Brazil's global anti-hunger alliance

*Argentina the only G20 country not to sign up to a global anti-hunger initiative set to be launched at the opening of leaders summit in Brazil. *

Argentina was the only G20 country not to sign up to a global anti-hunger initiative set to be launched at the opening of a G20 summit in Rio, host Brazil said Monday. The decision by Argentina – led by President Javier Milei – deepens a political gap between the nation and neighbouring Brazil, whose left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is championing the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

A total of 81 countries signed on to the flagship initiative – including 18 of the 19 nations in the G20 – but Argentina was not among them, according to a communiqué. Its membership is "under negotiation," a source in the Brazilian Presidency told the AFP news agency.

The Global Alliance is an ambitious initiative pushed by Lula, a former steel-worker. It aims to eradicate hunger and poverty by 2030 and reduce inequality. Milei and Lula, whose countries share a border, have had a tense relationship even prior to the Argentine's election last year.

An ally of US president-elect Donald Trump, Milei has imposed radical austerity measures in Argentina to bring down high inflation. The policies sent the poverty rate in the country soaring to 52.9 percent in the first half of this year, 11 percentage points higher than in the previous six-month period.

Milei was the first world leader to see Trump after the Republican's win in the US presidential election. He attended a gala at the Republican's Mar-a-Lago Florida estate last Thursday.

The Argentine leader has several times labeled Lula a "communist" and "corrupt."

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty also has the support of international organizations such as the European Union and the African Union – both G20 members – as well as financial institutions and NGOs, bringing the total number of signatories to 147. The initiative's goal is ambitious: to reduce world hunger, which affected 733 million people last year – nine percent of the global population – according to the UN.

For Lula, who grew up in poverty before a trade unionist and eventually president of Latin America's biggest economy, the initiative is dear to his heart. At a national level, his left-wing policies have already lifted millions of Brazilians out of poverty.

I sometimes don't even know what they're trying to achieve. Hunger good I guess? It's even worse when we consider that these global programs never really have impact on the matter, because hunger and poverty are essential to Capitalism, but still they have to signal that any kind of movement towards improvement, no matter how insignificant, must be squashed. Just sign the fucking thing you pathetic motherfucker.

In Finland news.

National news is running a story on the Chinese ship Yi Peng 3 stating that it has visited Russian ports several times. This is the story, full stop. This is framed as being very suspicious although nothing is actually being said. The headline literally is "Chinese ship has suddenly visited Russian ports several times". The newspiece has open commenting so the local conspiracy heads can rile themselves up well and good.

This is accompanied by another news piece with speculation on a Russian war ship being parked at the Denmark strait near the Chinese ship. This is full on conspiracy brain stuff, in our national news.

On Putin and the missile there are stories where history now starts from the missile. It's Russian aggression and just happened for no reason. Putins speech is called chilling and a threat to the West. An expert is called upon to explain how the next weeks will be dangerous, but we are told that there is one thing that can appease Russia. I did not look at what this one thing is. No mention of the USA or UK.

On Ukraine the story that most ukrainians would wish for the war to end is also up with an open commenting section. Hundreds of Finns have taken the time to comment on how we should fight to the last ukrainian.

There is also a piece about the missiles having no payload which seems to puzzle the local natohawks somehow.

There is also an interesting type of new anti-labor news story about a remote worker who works globally and thinks labor laws and such restrict this awesome new lifestyle.

Several other stories on the cable stuff and much warmongering, but nothing much worth going over.

Two of the crimes attributed to Bolsonaro are set out in a law that he himself signed when he was president of the Republic. In 2021, the then president sanctioned, with vetoes, the law that punishes attacks against democracy, approved by the National Congress. Crimes under this law served as the basis for the Federal Police report.

He probably wanted to use this against leftists?

After being indicted for attempted coup, Bolsonaro attacks Moraes and says he will wait for his lawyer to make further comments. Bolsonaro spoke to the reporter from the “Metrópoles” portal and then posted the interview on his profile on the X social network.

“Minister Alexandre de Moraes conducts the entire investigation, adjusts testimonies, arrests without charges, fishes for evidence and has a very creative advisory. He does everything the law doesn't say,” said the former president.
