Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

The west is deindustrializing in the quest for Net Zero

Lmao thats a fucking lie

Wait, wait

The west is [...] in the quest for Net Zero

Still a fucking lie

[–] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 59 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Net zero what? Net zero wage payments? Bc I know they’re not talking about hitting climate goals lol

[–] Zascoco@hexbear.net 31 points 1 year ago

The only net zeros goal that the west is actively pursuing is genociding every palestinians alive and other natives around the world.

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

They're trying to net additional zeros at the ends of their bank accounts.

Wait this is a 6 month old repost?

His main point isn't even true, China is installing more electric arc furnaces every year. As of January 2024, China has installed 151 million metric tons per year of operating EAF capacity, exceeding the 143 MMt/y needed to achieve the 15% EAF production target by 2025.

British steel, for comparison, has an operating (blast furnace) capacity of 5.9 MMt/year. Yet its going to take until 2032 for them to convert 4% of what China can do in a year? LMAO

So yes, they are winning in every imaginable way xi-lib-tears

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 39 points 1 year ago

lmao, that's more than Europe's total steel production. Keep cryin' colonizers

British steel, for comparison,

An Indian company shut down British steel production last year

Ta ta!

After the very same company nearly did the same to Poland you would think other countries would think twice before letting them have their strategic resource production but alas.

skimming this it looks like all of the deindustrialization he describes is due to profit-maximizing decisions, which he then pretends were made for environmental reasons

Must be nice to live in a country where people are actually put to work instead of your choice of unemployment or two minimum wage jobs (and even then good luck getting an interview) because porky is way too picky to hire anymore.

[–] Sausage@hexbear.net 30 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I do hear that china has very high youth unemployment though but idk how the statistics are made if lots of those young people are in university or training I guess it’s not to bad

[–] cecinestpasunbot@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I remember looking it up and it was about the same as Europe but higher than the US.

[–] Sausage@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

It’s at 18.8% which is high here where I am it’s around 10%

Tons of CO2 particles that could have joined their friends and families in Earth's upper atmosphere but now aren't going to because the Chinese are genociding them with their "clean" (read "pure", obviously a dogwhistle for gas supremacy) technologies.

The righteous Carbon Liberation Front is being oppressed by the evil CCP!!!

By the time the west has gone through its collapse phase, and begun to try something new socially and economically, it's going to be so far be behind.

Even from a purely nationalist chauvinist angle, neoliberalism has been an unmitigated disaster.

Summary:

The West Is Falling because our green energy is made by Chinese producers and because said green energy is weaker than fossil fuels because it’s too woke

Carbon emissions are still bad when the reds do it though cause they’re caring more about supplanting the international-community-1 Free World international-community-2 than about the environment because they still have coal power plants

The enemy is both woke and unwoke etc

screenshot of a comment under the article, reads "Time for Western countries to shut down and defund not the police departments but Universities which gave up producing valid science, intellectuals. The Root cause are crackpot socialists and corporate commies."

seeing China's W's, maybe we need more corporate commies
