Today sucked for pain but I saw a skink in my house. Which was interesting. I’m glad Melbcat didn’t see it because even at her age she is a fantastic hunter.

No idea how it got in. Considered catching/shooing him out to avoid brutal murder by cat, but didn’t want to traumatise him or make him drop his tail. So I didn’t get any closer. Hoping he finds his way safely out.

Watching Terms of Endearment because it's supposedly famously melodramatic. Why is everyone in this movie so horrible/creepy. John Lithgow has such an innocent and smooth face though

E: how was this such a popular movie, so much schlock. I hate almost everyone in this. So manipulative! What a sign of changed morals...

I had this plunger thing I bought from Daiso that was great for making scrambled eggs. The MIL managed to break it and she couldn't find another one at Daiso recently.

It was already a cheap plastic French press, so I'll see if I can find an actual French press and replace it with that

[-] Force_majeure123@aussie.zone 7 points 15 hours ago

I find the idea of using a plunger to scramble eggs way more repulsive than I should

[-] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 3 points 15 hours ago

It sounds odd using a French press. The cup from Daiso is this cute plastic thing with a little chicken on top of the plunger.

But damn, it scrambles the eggs well and is easy to clean

[-] Force_majeure123@aussie.zone 3 points 14 hours ago

I don't even pre-scramble anymore, just bust em up in the pan 🤷‍♂️

[-] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 2 points 13 hours ago

I second this method.

[-] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 2 points 13 hours ago

A fork in a glass works well too, but I found my little plastic plunger to be a bit more consistent

[-] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 12 hours ago

This sounds ridiculously cute and now im on a mission

[-] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 4 points 10 hours ago

This is what it looks like. There are two discs at the bottom full of holes that mash and aerate the egg. It did a good job

Tinyest's language comprehension appears to have exploded. Still limited words back, but answers are starting to form. Last night I asked him if he wanted to get out of the bath. He shakes his head and says something similar to "nuh". I asked if he wants a bottle, he ponders for a second and goes "Yeh" and starts climbing out of the bath. Blew my mind. Didnt realize he was there yet.

[-] just_kitten@aussie.zone 6 points 18 hours ago

"Are you ready for bed?"

Yeh... yeh nuh...

[-] TinyBreak@aussie.zone 3 points 16 hours ago

Pretty much! It’s rarely a yes to something we want it to be a yes to.

[-] TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone 3 points 15 hours ago

When Tinyest starts going through the 'NO!' stage, ask him if he wants a lolly .... This is guaranteed to traumatise him with his first taste of existential angst. An important part of growing up.

Uni meeting didn't go as badly as i thought, but I've been feeling really out of it and congested most of the rest of the day. Brain really has taken a battering after the past few days and there's no rest in sight as I've got a major job ahead with cleaning up the house for inspection next week, and also starting to line up rental inspections myself (fuck that noise majorly, but I got no choice).

It's a real effort to try and relax and not constantly feel like I should be doing something

[-] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 16 points 21 hours ago

I had an interview today for the exact sort of time I want at a place I'd be happy to work for. If that works out I'd start at the end of the month, so right when my 2 weeks pay from the old place would go up to.

If this works out I'm pretty much getting a 2 week holiday before starting work I actually enjoy

[-] just_kitten@aussie.zone 3 points 17 hours ago

Fingers crossed for you too, it's a great feeling when it all lines up like that!

[-] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 3 points 15 hours ago

It would be great if this works out. I've had times where I've really struggled to find work and I can't afford that downtime now. This would be a contract to see me through to next year so I have plenty of breathing room if I don't get any of the jobs I'm applying for now

Two more weeks until I'm free from academic jail for the year, and I'm dying to visit some dive bars. Going to ~~force~~ gently nudge some friends and hopefully they'll be up for it. If not, I shall bring a book so I don't sit there awkwardly and enjoy the ambience.

I'm not going to practice tonight. I'm starting to get complacent.

One more practice tomorrow before the gig and that'll do.

Edit: even with a migraine I'm going. Not to tempt fate, but still.

Got the news this morning but haven't brought myself to tell anybody yet so you'll be the first. I did the glucose resistance test last week and it seems I have type 2 diabetes. I felt fine during and after the tests so I thought maybe I'd be ok but apparently not so much.

It was almost inevitable, I think, considering dad and I are so similar and he has it. I'm still processing it though. I don't think I have any of the symptoms of it but no doubt if I don't start managing it they'll start popping up. This is my first real health issue. Never broken a bone or had to go to hospital besides normal infant stuff. Not as invincible as I suspected.

[-] wscholermann@aussie.zone 9 points 21 hours ago

The good news is that it's manageable and it doesn't have to stop you living your life. You will be ok.

Things are getting a bit busy at work, which is perfect timing, as my secondment to a higher position is coming to an end.

Now I can actually focus on what I'm doing and not sort out other people's issues.

Yay me!

Sister had her performance meeting today.

They just said she has a lot to learn because she's only been there for a year and she's the youngest in her team. They gave her no feedback on her actual performance. There are people in the same role who have been there longer and are earning at least 10k more than her. I hope she jumps ship soon and finds something better.

[-] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 4 points 15 hours ago

Yep. Been there. I hope she gets out of there soon and finds something she likes. Sometimes these places just can't see the wider context of why someone is performing the way they are
