Just a thought.

They already made Lite versions of Facebook and Instagram.

And a lot of the new functions (stories, screen share, and the avatar emojis) only come as bloat for users like me.

So i think they should make an official app that came without those "features", having a priority on simplicity and data saving.

Unfortunately, I think they're moving in the other direction. They just discontinued Messenger Lite, which I used. I think now that people in India and other countries have more powerful phones, they feel less urge to keep the Lite versions available

But Messenger Lite never made sense because Facebook Lite already had messaging support.

Many use the messager to stay in contact with people even if they don't use facebook itself much, especially on phones so it absolutely did if you ask me!

[-] Granixo@feddit.cl 2 points 1 year ago

I know that's the case of many sadly 😓

I personally would greatly prefer to use Messenger via the Facebook mobile webapp, but that's not an option, to my great chagrin. I wish they'd just let me use their product how I want to, but that's not The Facebook Way.

They discontinued the messager Lite not that long ago so I seriously doubt that will ever happen, luckily I don't use Whatsapp I guess but most people sadly more or less have to!

Meta is killing off Messenger Lite soon. I don't know that they're embracing the Lite route as much anymore.

And yeah, nobody knows what Meta really embraces anymore. (Aside from getting all your money and data).

I recently uninstalled Instagram and started using it in my browser where I can use uBlock to block features I don't need like reels and the explore feed. WhatsApp is the last remaining Meta app on my phone, and I look forward to the day that I can just get rid of it.

https://9to5google.com/2023/09/11/whatsapp-third-party-chat-apps-beta/ The only hope would be forced third party support at least in EU

You're right, they should make a Lite version. There is a version that could be said to be Lite, but it is only for a system called KaiOS.

I am still stunned that ages after Mozilla dropped their Firefox web OS stuff the third biggest phone OS (Kai) is still based on it's remainings!

[-] Granixo@feddit.cl 4 points 1 year ago

Well, Firefox was born out of Netscape's remains so... history repeats itself.

[-] Gamey@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago

There was a time when Mozilla was serious about competing rather than just surviving and it makes me a little sad that they droped basically all of that, Google still pays them a ton of money so it's basically just greed that got them here! :(

[-] kib48@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

theoretically that version could just work on other OSes since KaiOS apps are all PWA

[-] HaggierRapscallier@feddit.nl 2 points 1 year ago

KaiOS, also known as Mozilla's biggest fumble to date.

[-] kib48@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I wouldn't call it a fumble, it seems pretty successful in its target demographic

[-] HaggierRapscallier@feddit.nl 2 points 1 year ago

The fumble was letting it go obviously!

[-] kib48@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

ohhh i thought they were still working on it i didn't know it was an entirely separate project

[-] Granixo@feddit.cl 2 points 1 year ago

I didin't know about that!

I'll look it up 🤓
