Example: if I search "Overwatch" and sort by Communities, I'll get 0 results.

I know Overwatch communities exist and have no idea why Im getting 0 results. I confirmed that lemmy.film is not defederated with the instance that hosts the various communities.

Use lemmyverse.net, set your home instance there (home icon), then search

If no one on your instance manually opened the community it won't be shown in search.

And yes, I think that needs to be fixed ASAP.

By opened do you just mean browsed it at all by manually typing in the URL?

Yes, or searched for the full name including instance url

I searched !overwatch@lemmy.world and no results still, am I doing something wrong?

Sometimes you need to actually try a few times, or go to /c/overwatch@lemmy.world on your instance and refresh it after 10 seconds

just hang out on the search results for a moment and itl get pulled in and show up.

note that doing this it only pulls in a few previous posts, someone on your instance (you) needs to subscribe to the community for your instance to get new posts and comments.

apparently lemmy.world had some issues part of saturday so that may be why you had issues with your search, but they setup cloudflare so they'll have less in the future.
