I was very lucky to find an almost good-as-new PSP 2000 locally. I am very excited about it! It will need a new battery though and it only came with an USB charger. Would appreciate any tips pertaining chargers and batteries. But if you have any gaming related suggestions or general tips I'm open for that too :)

Get yourself a microSD to Ms pro duo card, and hack the shit out of it!

Also official batteries aren't made anymore as far as I know, so just find yourself a battery from a reputable source. Mind your model number if you do.

I did not know adapters like that exist for MicroSD cards. Thank you!

This is the #1 most important tip lol
Those proprietary memory sticks were really expensive even when they were being actively manufactured, can’t imagine what they must cost now

My own recommendation: mod it, this way you can download and play any PSP game you want, also de PSP is able to run PS1 games natively so yep, you can also play the PS1 library (with a few exceptions).

You can also install homebrews or even retroarch. It's a magnificient console to play retro games on the go.

For me, the psp and the psvita are ones of the best handleds out there. Perfect size and so much to play!

Whaaat I can play PS1 on the go?! That's great

[-] QuarterlySushi@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago

I have so many fond memories of playing my modded PSP. Everything from NES ROMs, to PS1 native emulation or Crisis Core, I even used it as an MP3 player with an aux cable in my car before there were better solutions, or watching Futurama on my breaks at work. Back in the day there was no single device that could do all of this. Even now it’s so comfortable and the buttons feel so great compared to newer handhelds, so I just replaced the battery and started replaying Puzzle Quest.

Nothing to add except calling the PSP retro made me feel old.

2005 was 18 years ago. Damn.

[-] rockhstrongo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I was listing a PSP game on eBay the other day.

"Surely this didn't come out in '06... Oh..." 💀

[-] DrQuint@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Oh, shit, look. My favorite emulation station and second favorite console.

[-] kratoz29@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

That it is a great handheld.

I'd recommend to check Cameron Sino batteries, they are often recommended as good aftermarket batteries.

As for games I recommend you the God of War Games, Patapon, Loco Roco and the Burnout games! If you are a fan of Dragon Ball you have some great games there too!

[-] Max17@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

You should know that Patapon 2 is the best game ever :D

Definitively grab one of the Memory Stick/MicroSD adapters, way cheaper and better than using a memory stick.

[-] Shialac@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

I still hate myself that I gave mine away back when I lost interest in it

Jeanne D'arc!!! My favorite turn based game of all time!

[-] QuarterlySushi@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

This brings me back to plugging my PSP into my TV with the big component cable adapter to play that game. This thread is making me so nostalgic.

[-] suprjami@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago

Yeeee, I'm halfway through this atm and it's great.

[-] samwise@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I absolutely adored that game! Im not normally a turn based game person too but the characters in that game were so entertaining to me for some reason.

Now I gotta figure out how I can replay it

[-] QuarterlySushi@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

PSP emulation is solid! I just played through Crisis Core on my modded switch at 2x resolution.

Mod it with a CFW and put a new battery!

That is all you need. The homebrew scene is amazing and so is this console.

[-] technohacker@programming.dev 4 points 1 year ago

I remember back when I had my 3004 mystic silver and messed around so much with CFW, I wouldn't be surprised if my love for tinkering was significantly due to it :D

[-] xan1242@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

I still love the plugin architecture of its OS. The entire device is very well designed from ground up and is really easy to develop for (even without an actual SDK).

It's no wonder why the homebrew scene was so good.

[-] Kronusdark@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Tony Hawk Underground 2 Remix is my favorite Tony Hawk game and it is really good on the PSP.

[-] MaxVoltage@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

test the battery life. pray you can get more than 1 hour out of it

[-] theteachman@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

We had a lot of joystick drifting with that model, me and my bros, tho frankly it was a hand-me-down from our cousin and he said he dropped it once. Do be mindful of that and keep a spare joystick 'round for repairs, by you or a respectable electronics repairer.

Get yourself an av adapter to play on your TV when you want a bigger screen!

  • Metal Gear AC!D
  • Jeanne d'arc
  • Final FANTASY tactics
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
[-] morganth@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago

You must play Metal Gear Acid. Metal Gear fans at the time hated it because it was a deckbuilding game and not at all what they were expecting, but it’s brilliant. The sequel is okay but they simplified the deckbuilding so it’s not quite as good.
