I just checked the github page and it seems this bug is low priority:

Memmy does sometimes not let you post or comment due to a weird bug that thinks you‘re posting in the wrong language.

I just want to point out that I‘ve had this bug twice so far and others (maybe many) will have it too which severely hinders the growth of lemmy at this critical time.

If someone reads this who has any clout, stuff like this is what can trip a promising platform like this. Exponential growth and all.

Have a good one.

I suspect you're fighting a feature built into Lemmy itself, rather than the app. I've been blocked for some arbitrary words before, but have not used Memmy as I'm not an Apple user.

Thanks for answering so quickly! :) Indeed, I am fighting a feature of lemmy which probably wasnt the smartest to even integrate but memmy is actually looking into this. The issue seems to be that you cant select the language while posting as you can in the web frontend. And sorry, I don't plan to stay an apple user for much longer. Stems from another life. :D

It’s not a Memmy bug. It’s moderators configuring their community settings incorrectly

[-] Haui@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

Thank you for answering. Can you elaborate on that please? Because there is exactly 1 field where you can choose your language in a community, which allows for 3 options (in my case) which is german, english or undetermined.

I chose english.

There is no explanation to wether I should choose something else.

So let me rephrase that for you:

It is no fault of the moderators but of lemmy creators not making this clear.

And yes I find it insulting to make it mods fault choosing english as their subs language.

what kind of feature is this even ? I don't see the point in it...

That is a question I have asked myself too. I'll just employ chesterton's fence here and assume it does serve some kind of purpose I'm just unable to see. :)

As a note, I would have included a link to the bug/issue if it's already been documented. It would make it easier for a developer to look at it and get more context to the issue.

You're absolutely correct. I'm sorry.

This has happened to me as well, I cannot comment in one of the communities anymore. I tried to change the language in the settings on my account, no effect. Right now I’ve uninstalled Memmy and I’m using a different IPhone app to post.

The dev is rolling out an update pretty soon. Lets hope that does it. Thank you for letting me know.

In my experience it's not a lemmy problem, it's a kbin problem. Typically it happens when replying to kbin comments, even if the post is on lemmy. I find that even when you set the language to post your comment, any subsequent replies from kbin won't come back to lemmy.

The issue is most likely to do with how kbin federates with lemmy. Our stuff makes it there, but their stuff doesn't always make it to us.

If that’s really the case it would be worth getting in touch with the developers of Kbin (and ofc Lemmy).

/u/sunaurus@lemm.ee is on it.

Hi there! Yes, it also happened on kbin in the past but in this case it is a fully lemmy situation (disuss.tchncs.de is a lemmy instance and ubuntuserver is a community there). But thanks for mentioning kbin. That was indeed the first time this popped up to me.
