I wonder how the handmaids tale would have gone if all the women had AK-47s?

This is known as 'The Nazi Gun Control Argument.'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_gun_control_argument

[–] KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

i mean, i would certainly rather be alone in the woods with an ak47, than without.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've been in a lot of woods and I can't think of a time where a machine gun would have improved things for me.

[–] KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

in this specific situation? I feel like it would probably help. To some degree.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Depends on what bear we're talking about here. Any bear but a grizzly or a polar bear is probably not going to mess with you in the first place unless you do something stupid like get between a mother and her cubs. And if a grizzly or polar bear are attacking you, you better be a good shot because they're fast.

[–] KillingTimeItself@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

oh true, i forgot polar bears. But why the fuck would a polar bear be in the forest?

if we're talking about a man though. It would probably help, i'm assuming we aren't just pitted back to back in the woods or something.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

huh. That definitely sounds like polar bears to me.

Afghanis drove out multiple world powers with rifles and homemade bombs.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How did that work out for them?

[–] CancerMancer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What argument are you making here?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I already made it. The Nazi Gun Control argument. Afghanistan is back to how it was before the U.S. invaded, thousands of deaths later, so if that's an example of how the Nazi Gun Control argument is false, it's a poor one.

[–] CancerMancer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Are you saying that there is a problem with Afghani culture, and that American culture is better or more valuable?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Afghan. Afghani is a currency.

[–] CancerMancer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I take it you don't want to engage the question because you realize the trap you're in? That's fine. Perhaps refrain from comparing people to Nazis in the future?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Considering you didn't know that 'Afghani culture' wasn't a thing, no, I didn't answer your loaded question. But please do tell me about this so-called trap I'm in.

[–] CancerMancer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This is like those really embarrassing 2000's era gotchas where someone would say some cringe shit like "you spelled X wrong and therefore I win this argument". You said the following:

I already made it. The Nazi Gun Control argument. Afghanistan is back to how it was before the U.S. invaded, thousands of deaths later, so if that’s an example of how the Nazi Gun Control argument is false, it’s a poor one.

How exactly am I to interpret this if not you saying that Afghan culture has a problem, or that you are comparing them to Nazis? Do you believe that the culture the Americans brought with them was better? If so, can you share a few ways American culture is better than Afghan culture?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If so, can you share a few ways American culture is better than Afghan culture?

Okay, sure.

  1. It's legal to be queer.
  2. Music is allowed.
  3. Women can wear whatever they want and have jobs.
  4. Girls can go to school.
  5. Religions other than Islam are permitted along with atheism.
  6. People can say what they want online or in person without being tortured and executed for blasphemy or heresy.

And, what the hell...

  1. It's legal to fly kites in the U.S.

Is that enough?

[–] CancerMancer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If polls indicated that the Afghan people preferred it that way, would it have been worth the deaths of so many to try to change it?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Who said it was worth any deaths trying to change it? You asked if one was superior to the other.
