As we all know here, material conditions have progressively been getting worse and worse. Based on pretty much all political theory, crime rates should also be going up with worse material conditions. But they haven't, in fact, crime rates have been going consistently down for the past 30 or so years. Why is that?

for a bunch of Americans, our crisis is boring and enervating, so people just rot with almost no energy and nowhere clear to direct what little they have towards change

when I'm feeling really doomer about it I tell myself that forest fires get really big when there's a lot of accumulated detritus ready to burn
