Problem is that 99.9% of the time what they think will be “whatever it takes to get votes” means moving economically to the right, mostly the same on social issues, perhaps a bit more xenophobic, and amp up the militarism. The uncomfortable reality for libs is, the “abandoned ideals” position that would peel off votes from republicans in many area of the country would be beerniecrat economics but with strong gun rights.
The larger issue though is that a lot of voters aren’t turned off by the particular positions but because they see democrats (with good reason) as being shifty and untrustworthy. A few pivots here and there a couple months before the election won’t fix that. Which is part of the problem with this “vote blue no matter who,” constantly chasing the current cycle politics, there’s never any long-term planning.
