it's funny to me that people are pretending like he's not just going to run again. He wants to be a dictator just like his favorite people, pootin and kim jong un. And all his stupid mouth breathing knuckle dragging supporters will just line up with whatever dumb bullshit excuse is fed to them "but presidents are only limited to two consecutive terms!" "but FDR!" "but he's a war-time president!"

There is no level of duplicitous stupidity these traitors won't stoop to.

You probably already know this, but at the time when FDR ran for and won 4 terms, the two term rule was just a customary practice. It wasn't written into the constitution.

After FDR died, Americans wrote up the two term rule as the 22nd amendment, and adopted it into the constitution.

And then there are the people who actually think he's going to run, when what he's probably going to try to do is declare himself Perma president

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think he's likely to not run again. Why run if you can just abolish the election?

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 5 points 23 hours ago

Even the Norks, Russia, and China hold elections it's just that they are Kabuki theater. But it helps grant legitimacy. Now mind you I one hundred percent think him and his supporters could try to cancel the election, but that would also likely backfire in some way. Probably a statement of non recognition of the feds by most states and a cutting off of interactions with the feds.

Yeah he's been openly suggesting a 3rd term for a while now. Selling hats and other merch. There have been multiple officials throughout the past 2 years publicly comment that they are looking for ways around the term limits. Every justification is some weasely attempt at semantics. Every criticism is met with 'he isn't serious' or some such hand wave.

Yet here we are. Some folks still pretending like it ain't plain as day.

I think one of his kids is going to run in his stead, like Bolsonaro.

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sure I think he will run again, but can you explain how he would do anything other than siphon votes off and guarantee and Democrat victory? Surely all the swing states are going to ban him from the ballot, and its impossible to win without them.

[–] joeschmoe@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Um, idk man, America elected a child-raping felon. Anything is possible.

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ya, I'm just trying to think about the actual mechanism he can use. To pull it off you have to get all the states to cooperate. That is near impossible.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 5 points 23 hours ago

Probably try to use Colorado attempting to strip him from the ballot in 24 as precedent to claim he cant be removed from the ballot in 28. Mind you there's garunteed to be far more states involved and frankly speaking the language of the constitution is clear on this one, so even if the supreme court favors Trump it's far more likely they'll just be ignored.
