It blows me away when I meet leftist activists who refuse to stop using corporate social media. The common refrain is "its where everyone is" or "no one uses [insert any decentralized and federated service]".

You cannot liberate yourself, or the rest of society, when you actively use the tools of your oppressors.

Look, I agree for the most part. Fuck FB and X and all the rest to hell. But organizers know that you need the most people you can get to have a chance of making a difference. That means you use every tool available for outreach. I've seen protests organized entirely on non-corporate platforms and they are... Small. You don't see those in the news and people driving by generally ignore them. If you can get the hype going through tiktok or facebook or whatever and get hundreds of people on board you can bring attention and make a difference. Now something I've seen done is using them to pull more people and then moving those people to decentralized options.

Then funnel them onto the fediverse from corporate social media, as you mentioned. The house is on fire, get them out of it.

Educate people (campaigns), organize tech workshops showing people how to use the other tools, set up local servers that can be used for organizing existing groups. Frame corporate social media as part of the data center problem... There's so many ways to approach it but as long as you keep using those tools, you will never carry through with getting people onto the fediverse. You can never just move them to decentralized spaces if not enough people use it, so use it (I know you are already though as we're here :)

Change is hard. But global climate collapse and WW3 are far worse options.

Yes, lets just leave all plattforms where we can get a bit of public reach and remove our ability to respond to people talking about us.

Online propaganda gets more necessary every day and leaving mainstream platforms just destroys any capability for it. Use smaller less controlled platforms for people already on your side but the only way to reach the average people will be on stuff like Instagram as long as it stays popular.

Their reach on the platform will be limited at best by the algorithm, making sure only a minimal number of people see their posts. That's why they need to diversify their medias print.

But telling them to stop using FB altogether… Nah. Even if Meta does this sort of crap, they can scream like they do now. If that scream reaches just a handful of people so that they finally get how bad that company is, or push them just enough to start exploring alternatives, that's a win.

Newsflash: everyone will be there if you move, and bring along one friend, who brings along one friend

I can see how easy that is from how mainstream Lemmy is right now /s

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Facebook at one time had a total of 1 user. Lemmy is at 200k. You cant get anywhere without starting somewhere, so some people have to post into a void until the audience comes.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

I tried to get about 2 dozen people to leave a Slack channel and move over to a Matrix room.

Wanna guess how many takers I got? And these are all technically proficient people.

Zero.

Nothing more cowardly than this opinion

This is how I feel when I meet leftist activists who refuse to stop eating meat

[–] benjirenji@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago

You just gotta get them join the community on a federated or otherwise uncontrolled channel. Just like all these shitty communities want me to join their Discord.

You probably shouldn't assume that monetized leftism is something that's authentic. Leftism is just a brand that's fairly profitable.

Hasan Piker is a creation of Jeff Bezos, and now he's a boogeyman being used to scare people into voting for the party that cuts his taxes.

Thinking wealthy social media influencers are going to bring about some glorious revolution is the flaw here. Wondering why wealthy "leftist" influencers stick with corporate social media is missing the whole point of the scam.
